Each time I start MultiBit, I see (Messages) that it re-syncs with the blockchain starting at the date I last used the program.

Every time I open my wallet (about 3x/mo), it has to re-sync starting way back on 15mar2014!

Is there a setting I've missed to not have to wait for it to go back so far each time?

I close my wallet every time, before I close the program.  Is that the source of this behavior?

Is this the way it's supposed to act?

Yes, no need to close the wallet itself, just close the app and next time it loads from that date.

I have always thought it would be more secure to close the wallet before the program.  Is that not the case?

The keys is to store unencrypted private keys of your wallet and wallet himself in USB or some another removable disk every time wen you make transaction. No need to close first the wallet.
