WikiLeaks Receives over $2.9 Milllion in Bitcoin Donations So Far

The decentralized nature of Bitcoin makes it independent of conventional banking and payment systems. The very reason led to WikiLeaks adopt cryptocurrency payments as the main donation option on its website. The whistleblower site created by Julian Assange has the habit of constantly finding itself in the bad books of the governments, which in turn has impacted its access to banking services.

Very interesting, I am monitoring WikiLeaks founding ways since 2010, as it is closely linked with cryptocurrency history.
As actually back in 2010 WikiLeaks was blocked by banking industry so Visa, MasterCard, Western Union and PayPal stopped processing donation to them.

Julian Assange wanted to accept bitcoin right away, but Satoshi contacted him and tell him to wait until mid 2011.
I am proud that bitcoin is helping tin a fight against internet censorship, this is the reason BTC was created!

Now that's an interesting piece of information, can you remember where you found that out?

I know it's coindesk (shudder) but it seems accurate and points to a reddit ama where julian expands on the situation at the time: http://www.coindesk.com/assange-bitcoin-wikileaks-helped-keep-alive/

I remember seeing emails on the mailing list which would still be searchable if you want info verbatim.

Kinda thought you would know about this Carlton Smiley

How much of this money will go towards Julian Assange and the court battles he will have to face, when they get their hands on him? We use

these other services daily, and they do not support WikiLeaks... How much is that saying of us? It is just a pity that Bitcoin is always the fall

back technology, when people cannot use these other payment options... Very controversial subject.  Roll Eyes

Some other ways of funding would probably finding their way to WL when they are already blocked by all major payment processors, but in this case Bitcoin had an important role. That government can somehow prevent donations through Bitcoin there is no doubt that they would do that.

Very interesting info about Julian Assange and Satoshi Nakamoto,I must admit that I did not know that the two of them had contacts in that time.I wonder if they keep in touch at the present time?

This is what I like about Bitcoin. No matter how difficult the government and its sheepy slave companies try to make it for Bitcoin by cutting WikiLeaks from all their services, there is always a way to generate money through Bitcoin. And the best thing of all is, no one can put a stop to it. If you look at all the incoming transactions, and put a number in BTC to it, then it would be around 0.157BTC per donation. Of course the far majority are smaller donations where there are several larger ones making up the total donated amount to what it is right now.
