In our Rip-Off Alert, a story that comes with a warning: Invest your money only with established, brand-name investment companies. If you don't do that, you could be risking your life savings.

"I thought he was a real nice fella. I thought as much of him as much as my kids. I put a lot of trust in the guy," said retired business owner Loren Dalton.

That trust was not returned. Dalton's longtime accountant, Barry Korcan, stole more than $900,000 from him in a bogus investment scheme

"He did my income taxes, and later he came up with this investment -- guaranteed -- never dropped below 8 percent,” Dalton said. “It wasn't worth the paper it was on."

Korcan urged his clients to put their money in his company called Guardian Investments. The ironic name didn't protect clients from false hope.

"They would get these statements thinking their money was growing,” said U.S. Postal Inspector Randy Hayden. “At the end of the day, these people lost their entire investments."

Korcan stole more than $7 million of his clients’ money and used it to buy several properties, including a golf center, lake homes and office buildings. Meanwhile, his victims lost everything.

"I feel terrible about it,” Dalton said. “I don't want anyone else to have to go through what I went through."

Korcan turned himself into the authorities. He pleaded guilty to federal charges of mail fraud and income tax evasion, and faces more than four years in jail.

And Pirate is hiding because...

Poor fella..

I think these guys should be given a chance to give back part of their money and be reintegrated.

After all, they do bring a lot of excitement into people's lives.

When pulling a show like that they have already proven to have character.

I'd exchange four years of my life for that much real estate.  Probably would get out in 18 months and would be easy time.

Too bad I'm not an asshole.  Smiley

I think anyone wanting to find Pirate bad enough could locate him. It just costs money to do so.

I really want to go in jail for 4 years in exchange for $7 million. Any ideas? Otherwise in next 4 years I expect to earn only about 8000 USD if I'm lucky and work really hard.

What, where do you live? You would have to live in one of the ~10 poorest Countries in the World for that. Which is meaning you would probably not have Internet.

All previous versions of currency will no longer be supported as of this update

I would choose four years of (relative) freedom over any sum of money, period.

I live in european union. We have one of the greatest success stories in modern day economics see here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/jun/07/christine-lagarde-perverse-praise-latvia-economic-success Actually it is a lie. I'm unemployed since the economic collapse in late 2008. Before that I was self-employed and worked in IT as a freelance. There is not much need for computer technician, network administrator or security consultant. Almost every job here is paid the minimum wage that is about 400 USD per month. From these 400 USD the income tax is deducted. Of course if someone works without legal work contract, he does not have the tax deducted from his bank account, but he might receive even less because there would not be mandatory minimum payout of 2.40$ per hour.

When all bills are paid, the cost of transportation to and from work are paid, many people end up spending more money than they earn. Sometimes there is not enough money for food at the end of month, sometimes the bills are not paid. Medicine is only available for free when there is emergency, so forget about repairing tooth at dentist. In such circumstances even 160 USD saved per month as free money is unrealistic.

The situation is much more favorable for those who work at government apparatus. I don't belong to them.

I chose to work odd jobs such as repairing pipes, repairing electronics and so on. And of course hacking! I can spare money on transportation and various other things.

Hacked local ISP. For me it is not problem at all. Previously paid for internet access, but it was slower and more unstable.

This freedom is very relative because when you cannot afford the car insurance and fuel, and sometimes not even a bus ticket, it is not much of freedom. I'm free to chose how I can abandon country of my ancestors, my fatherland! Having 7 million in 4 years is so much better. The prison is not much worse than some workplaces, and in prison at least every basic needs are for free. I will never earn 7 million in 4 years here.
