Doesn't leaving a computer on 24/7 cost more in electricity than the amount of coins gained?

It does.
That is why even GPU mining isn't useful, if you are paying your own electricity bill.
The way to go now is using ASIC systems. Those are way faster and cost less electricity.

Yes, you'll have to use an ASIC if you want to profit from mining.

That depends on the equipment you are using, the network difficulty, and the current exchange rate between the bitcoins you earn an the currency you use to pay your electric bill.

The network difficulty and the exchange rate are constantly changing, so you have to keep an eye on them to determine when mining is profitable.

I've seen a number of answerers on Quora who are still telling everybody how easy it is to mine Bitcoins with their GPU.  Seems like talking about Bitcoin makes it really easy to tell who actually knows their stuff.

I'd like to buy a ASIC but it seems scamming and paying upfront for units that may never ship,i'll just wait

If it is unprofitable for you, then don't mine.

The ASIC world today is a bit meh. The only company that, as far as i know, produced and delivered ASIC is Avalon.

Mine puts me in the green still(GPU based, will use for gaming once I can no longer mine). It's not a lot of $ or anything but I'll take what I can get.
