Can I find the block of a transaction without the entire blockchain?

If I want to verify a transaction by checking the validity of an input transaction, is there a way of finding the block containing the transaction, without having indexed the entire blockchain?

If you have an internet access you can ask blockexplorer/coinbase/blockchain.info
If not, no. Sadly
