The whole story around Ripple and R3 is a bit unclear but it seems like some month ago when XRP got a decent price R3 decided to get coins for $0.0085. It is unclear why do they need this coins. According their contract they can buy up to 5 bln coins. If R3 doesn't have any specific usage for it then I see a high chance of dumping those coins together with the XRP value. The beaviour of Ripple devs seems reasonable.

Yep. If you drop 5 billion (especially right now when Ripple is correcting after a good growth) imho it will obviously drop the price and can make a lot of dirty rumours. I see no reason for R3 to hold those coins untill they are needed for the development of some product (Ripple devs claimed that R3 haven't done everything good) so in case of a payout bump is more than real.
