They don't have to be exposed.  There are plenty of cable raceway systems that can be attached to the wall and painted the same color as the wall ... Just one example ...

I mean, I get what you're saying ... I wouldn't want exposed cabling running all over my house either.  I just wanted you to know that there are decent options out there that you can use to hide cabling.  I've used those things a lot.  Once they are painted the color of the wall, you barely notice them.
