I always get a kick out of it when I see somebody with an address in their sig looking for tips. Does anyone actually tip? HAS anyone actually tipped? I did once (maybe twice) to John K. for his escrow service, like .02 (what a guy I am).

There might not be as much of it going around as there used to be. It's more common on Reddit now via the tipbots.
I occasionally tip typically between 50k satoshi and 2,5 mBTC for quality/appreciation.
When I made my maiden post on Bitcointalk, the very kind and generous minimalB tipped me 500 mBTC for my trouble! That I haven't forgotten.
I have heard in Bitcointalk folklore that in the earliest days, tips of BTC50 or BTC100 were not unusual.

I believe this. Bitcoin was very experimental and one block was not worth more than today tips (around 0.01 probably)

I only tip if people have posted something which really helped me. For example I'm having trouble with something and they come up with a solution.

Yeah, I don't have my address listed as I'm not looking for tips and I also get tired of seeing people beg for fractions of coins. I've tipped for genuine help, like I won't forget the person who started the thread on how to get BFL refunds and when the refund came through, I figured it was definitely worth a tip. (Page 12 here, worth reading the whole thread if you're looking for a refund, https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=295187.220 ) I think it's a good thing that people tip. I tip fiat in restaurants, some taxi drivers and some insistent hotel doormen or bellboys although I generally go by the expression, "I tip for good service, not for bad." Nice to see people tipping on bitcointalk I reckon.

If BCTers post an inputs.io id in their signature, it makes tipping a lot easier because we can send each other mBTC tips without the transaction fees (eureka!).
