I've heard of people renting servers to mine bitcoin and other alt coins. I know that mining bitcoin with most servers will definitely be unprofitable. Does anyone know how exactly to go about using a server to mine? What company would you recommend using? And would this even be profitable in the long run? I would most likely use it to mine some type of scrypt coin and convert it to btc.

For bitcoin you can use cex.io, trade mining shares and earn mining profit.

For altcoins that required CPU miners like ProtoShares(PTS), Primecoin(XPM) you can rent a cloud/server hosting and setup your miner
Google "primecoin cloud mining" and "protoshares cloud mining" how to setup miner
