It depends on what your set-up is. If by "normal", you mean a store-bought pre-built, maybe, maybe not. If by "normal", you mean you build a desktop with a decent GPU for gaming, then maybe. A lot of the alts are still fairly low difficulty, especially the new ones. You just have to look around and find one that you like that you get a good return with your set-up.

What are you running?

Honestly you would best be suited to buy a ati card for mining. Take this from a guy who was stuck with nvidia mining all this time. I finally broke down and bought a few ATI cards and even a mid range ATI card puts the top end Nvidia to shame when it comes to mining.

The problem your going to run into though is if it is a pre built system the PSU will not handle the load of a grafix card usually.... they put the cheap end on that just enough to power the system its built for and pretty much nothing else. So if that is the way your going, I would also look at replacing the PSU with something mid range also.

If you really want to get into it, I would suggest going to PCpartpicker and picking out a MB, CPU, RAM, a couple of GPUs (ATI/AMD) and a PSU to make sure you have enough power. If it is going to be a dedicated rig for mining, you can save money on the MB, RAM and CPU, but not the GPUs or the PSU. This is if your desktop cannot take upgraded parts.

I only got into this because my previous PC was 7yrs old and it was time for a new build. Also remember that power isn't free and explain to your parents that the power bill will go up depending on how much power the rig draws.
