Users in the marketplace forums often post really professional looking promos for their Bitcoin-related site/service. How do they do this? The text in the message body isn't selectable which makes me think they're taking screenshots of their site, saving as a .png, and just uploading the image slices. Presumably there's more to it than that (or is there?). Any tips on the best way to craft such a post in terms of optimal image sizing, the mechanics of inserting the images, etc.? Is it simply a matter of repeatedly clicking the 'insert image' and uploading?

Apologies for the newb nature of this post. I'm completely new to the site.

They are inserting images (a full images or slices) that's why you can't select the text.
The images are created using photoshop or are just screenshots of the website.
To make the image work like a link redirecting to the promoted website, insert the image link inside the URL tag.

Quote their posts and you will know how all of this works.

You can do a lot of stuff they do on powerpoint or the libre office equivelant I wouldn't bother getting paid software especially (libre office is free and open source).

Just decide on something that looks good to you.
I'm not sure how big these posts are alloweed to have a maximum but it's good to use the preview buttonn at the bottom of the posting screen if you want to check how your post will turn out.

Images can't be uploaded to the server, a lot of people will upload images elsewhere. Imgur, facebook and google work (if you send something to yourself on facebook then it works as you can copy the address).

Maybe the answer is below.
Images must be less than 1.5MB. Resize or compress your image.
Don't know whether it's now improved, also don't know whether this size for each image or all images in one post.
So far I haven't tried it, my ranking isn't possible. Only a few times saw other member's posts that failed to load their images.

You need to have basic BBcode knowledge nothing else.

This is a well organized guide to use BBCodes by @xtraelv, it can help you further.

You are exactly right! They are probably just uploading the images on third party image uploading platforms like imrgu and using the BBcode to post it.

Code:
[img]image.url[/img]

You can even change the image sizes displayed by indicating the height and width. Refer the guide above.

Any tips on the best way to craft such a post in terms of optimal image sizing, the mechanics of inserting the images, etc.? Is it simply a matter of repeatedly clicking the 'insert image' and uploading?

I would suggest, you could see others examples, use the quote button and check there used BBCode, you would get a better idea.

Do these posts work? I skip over them, and ignore the thread if it is the opening post. This is a message forum, and not a webpage hosting service. I like to read the facts, and not look at pretty pictures that don't say anything.

They work, just like any other advertising works. Although, if you aren't interesting in any related services to the ones offering or you don't come here to trade then they aren't likely to appeal to you. However, these promo posts are definitely something which is effective as it gives the illusion that the seller has put in effort, and looks more professional.

If you advertise you normally do a couple of things. A promo video, a catchy banner/images and text.... Its the best way to reach the largest audience. Images are overused here though in some of those posts. One or two should be sufficient if even that.

The 1.75mb limit is no longer in force (or doesn't seem to be) the op of that post has an image that's 1.76 mb.

Bbcode is aftermath, first they must make 'pleasing image' using some software then uploading and using bbcode part comes in. That is what op is asking, I believe.

I suspect most would just use Photoshop, as others have already mentioned.

I'm personally more of a Gimp fan (being free & open-spource 'n all), it's definitely more than adequate to create these types of images.
I'd suggest watching a couple of the tutorials on this particular Youtube channel, that will give you the info needed to create images like those.

https://www.youtube.com/user/DaViesMediaDesign/videos

His flyer tutorials should really help you out, they're quite similar to what you're looking for!
