If one can notify @Lauda to merge / extend his/her post it'll be great

Original Post (or OP as you like to type Cheesy ): https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1689727.0

I used to be a mod on different kind of forums so excuse my habit.

I would like here to collect all suggestions for new clusters/topics to be included in such "Newbies - Read before posting" pinned post.

I see the need for following references to be added:

1. Fees - how are they calculated, what are the tips/tricks to get lower fees
2. The maths behind private key and public address - there are some good reads thread on this already
3. Where to buy BTC? best 3 options
4. Top 3 (5) best centralized service to be used for exchange (use if possible a poll with the mostly referred sites)
5. Pinned post (single post) about how to generate safe a paper wallet, transfer funds to it, withdraw and convert to fiat
6. Same like 4, simplified version for using HW wallet and SW wallet
7. Top 3 (5) best mobile wallet (use a poll for that)
8. Transactions - how to create offline transaction, how to optimize its costs? How long a transaction can stay unconfirmed? Can it be lost / can it expire if it's not processed within a certain time? Can you set a transaction with 0BTC fee between your own wallets / addresses?
9. Lessons learned - a collection of user's bad experiences - what went wrong and what are the best experiences - brief statements not letters Smiley
10. Small intro into Trading BTC - what's the percentage a certain currency should evolve or a fixed value in order to have profit after you'll exclude the fees?

Feel free either to provide some answers or for other suggestions to complete such "Newbies - Read before posting" guide Smiley

Too bad that Lauda has given his/her (LOL) statement to permanently leave the forum. I am not just sure if there is someone who can personally contact her just to edit the created pinned post.

Hereby I want to emphasize that it will never again be possible to contact "Lauda", just as it is impossible to contact the dead. I do not want any chance of an impersonation scam in a name that many people trust.
I wonder if there will be a function for moderators to edit or update someone's post in the upcoming bitcointalk forum software. That function is similar from what I have experience when I tried asking for help in stackoverflow.

As far as I am concerned, I think it would be better to just leave the forum as it is since there are lot of members here who are willing to answer those question comprehensively regarding any topic. Anyhow, I still like the idea  Wink

I didn't know about that...huh still, any moderator (to not mention an admin) can do merging or reopen closed threads.
Considering the amount of registered users (more than 1 million) and daily activity, multiple moderators are needed to cope with the work to be done.

Does it much better to be Read Search before posting? Cheesy So they can knew it yourself by using search engine.

Your top 10 references are good threads and important to read especially for a newbies, but to be honest there's a lot good threads out there and I think it's not really good to made compilation useful and helpful topic in one thread. Because most of them will ignore it since they saw too much topic that must be read and boring.

Different peoples have different interests.

I'm sure there are very good threads that can be really helpful a newbie to start with if they would have known about their existence therefore such must read threads should be pinned by a moderator...
The Index thread above is such example to be pinned but how to better organize this section as the only section moderator seems to not be active since 2018? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=14001

The search is also good but its results requires time to process and to fine tune your next search and to not mentioned the weird feature of setting timer between sequenced searches for a new user!

AFAIK, mods can also edit, lock, and delete topics @frodocooper one of the mods who edits a lot of topics.
Writing an ideal topic requires the community to vote and then it is possible to amend the current topic or sticky a new topic
if a newbie can access this section and read that topic, then he can search for the topics.

It is best to teach beginners how to do proper research to find the right topics for them.

Correct since all newbies are just learning to learn the forum functions so its a big struggle for them to find the information they needed and good thing we have lauda sticky thread above in this section since it can lessen the effort that will be made by newbies for them to learn.

Also @OcTradism is right since newbie just need to click the search button to find those information since many users already give their answers in related to helping newbie topics.

OP, rename the topic "can moderators edit old topics?". Since your proposal, as you can see, is secondary. Grin
Also, you have not provided the actual links to these, in your opinion, important topics.
If, as you claim, you have experience as a moderator, why weren't you able to beautifully design your theme using the links provided?
And why do you think that several of your themes should be added to the top? Just wondering, nothing personal. The activity of beginners always excites, nothing more.

I brought up some time ago my concern on the fact that some sticky threads were owned by accounts that were no longer around, and therefore, any suggestions to add or alter their content would be in vain. Specifically, I was concerned at the time that forum rules translated into local languages were out of sync (see Local Board forum rules asynchronisms).

The case being dealt with in the OP bears a smaller scope, but since the likeliness of the thread referenced in the OP being modified is close to null, one could always build their own thread as a superset, and reference/quote the original content as needed. Getting it pinned though is a whole different matter.

That's the issue, there are many very good threads that should be pinned in order that the next newbie comes will not have to raise same questions again or one existing pinned post (like the one created by Lauda) should be extended, any moderator per section or global moderator /admin can edit posts.
Thanks to some old members that knew keywords to use for searching, I managed to cover some of my 10 points I addressed in the initial post.

It took me a while, but I managed to find a (small) thread I had in the back of my mind on the matter of editing threads/stickies belonging to people no longer around: Add feature request.

Moderators will not really take on the role of altering the content of existing stickies created by other people, although some dire theoretical need could exceptionally rise, were the contained links somehow to point to rouge sites. Acting upon non-official informative content per se doesn’t seem to be likely at all though.

Suggestions on the thread I referenced above, seemed to point to creating another new thread, crediting/referencing the former, and applying for a change of sticky. This is easier said than done, and may be taken into account if the content were to become stale, but an informative content enhancement is not likely to warrant a sticky replacement. On the other hand, if one does create a thread that is considered sticky worthy, people could try to push for it being added up there.

I suggested to pin the Welcome message as a sticky thread but there are 2 opposite opinion on it. The common opinion is both sides agree the helpfulness of good threads but some do think that too many sticky threads in each board or sub-board can result in confusing or distraction or sometimes annoyance.

Think of it a few times, I agree that pinning too many sticky threads is not a good idea and some most helpful threads for new members should be included into the Welcome message.

Fortunately, unofficially, the community can raise their voice and ask to include helpful threads in a few big compilation.
