Most of them meant every word they said during the elections campaign period, but immediately after they are voted into power, they forget all the promises they've made and allow the power they now hold intoxicate them. Many of these politicians are taking advantage of the fact that the people they represent are very easy to be manipulated,  they won't learn to keep to their campaign promises as long as the masses do not say NO! to all forms of manipulations and deceit initiated by the politicians and their cohorts. There are still good politicians though, but the corrupt politicians and even the masses won't allow their goodness to be felt.

It is looking like telling lies is the prerequisite of becoming a politician. As a matter of fact, there is a way you will tell lies that people will start suspecting you to be a politician.  How we get to this point in human history is what no one can explain. 
I don't know about your country but in my country, politicians buy over media empires to sell lies and propaganda to the public... I know this is not peculiar to my country. This may be the reason there is a growing distrust between the leaders and the followers.

Politicians are surviving with lies. Like the latest lies in my country now is from the senators. A senator revealed or exposed that their salary foe a month is ₦21 millions and the senate President said it is for running cost for the senators.
So SERAP (Socio - Economic Rights And Accountability Project) a non governmental agency gave the Senate to tell them the running cost of the ₦21ms.

Who have not lied or thought about lying just not to upset our parents before? It is a common thing, specially during childhood. Now think how a politician feels when they are not dealing with their parents but with a whole country paying attention to them and their mistakes, it is way easier to fall into a whirlpool of lies instead facing the truth and the voting base.

That is why politicians will continue lying as long as they are human beings and the culture remains the same in their societies.

That is fact to life. It is all about individual interest that when you are caught up to be tinted with penalties, you will always create that path to maneuver the consequences.
Like you said, everyone lies or have lied formally due to self interests.

It is all about defendant or chasing after goal. The act of lying starts from childhoods right within the circle of relatives then spreads to the societies where it becomes part of a social life.

So politicians lying are cause of the people not welcoming to hear the truth as they would say.... " The truth is always bitter" and politicians being psychological enough to tell the people what they expected to hear,  they sugarcoats the words to enable the audience embrace it especially at the circumstances of voting.

When I hear campaign promises, I rather try to hear them as possible lies, but in the end, it is up to the candidate for them to be lies or not, in the case they manage to get power..

It also mostly depends on the culture and the nation itself we would be talking about, in my opinion. There are cultures in which it is more socially acceptable for a politician to give up on corruption and adopt lies as main driving force to continue within the world of politics. That is why I don't like the current status of the politics within the western hemisphere, where it is approaching, it would seem that the quality of politicians is decreasing in a very rapid progression, leading to demagogy and liars to have a chance to get in positions which they were never supposed to be in the first place.
There are countries in which politics is regarded as a serious matter and it those caught in corruption are used as an example of punishment, Japan and Nordic countries come to mind when I think of highly functioning democracies, they are not perfect, obviously...

How is that even possible that they have good intentions and immediately they get into office tgiwr good intention immediately vernishes? From the kind of outrages promises they make during campaign to how much money they are willing to flung out, it's obviously clear that they are just trying to leverage on the vaulnaurability of the masses to secure there votes and end it all at that point.

How possible a politician stand up to his promises is always an interplay of his personal resolve to meeting those promises and the plan of the party he belongs to. Sometimes we blame a particular politician and leave out the platform he contested under. Those political party still have thier own role to play in assisting or frustrating some good effort of politician that have the plan of matching thier words with action.

Politics itself is what we call lies, the reason why I said Politics itself is called a lie is because since I was a kid in my country till now that I'm 23 years old I have never seen any polician make a promise in public and after winning the election he will fulfill his promise, lie in Politics have become something that is part of what makes some people win the election, my country has failed many times when electing good leaders, we always fail to choose the right person all in the name of lie and promises they made, sometimes if you remember what those who claim to be our leaders today promise us you will feel like doing something that is not good but even if you try that the power is still in their hand.

A full-grown man can stand in public and swear to the extent of taking an oath and making a promise to the people just for him to win the election but after the election, they will not even remember those he promised and the oath they took and that is why some of them will never end well until he dies, to lie to people and make a promise to the poor is a very risky thing because you don't know what some people are capable of doing and every time our leaders keep lying just to be the head of our country and squander public funds.

In every country of the world lies have a great role in the domination of politics.   And in every country, politicians are more focused on increasing their own power than the interests of the people.  But not all politicians are the same there are very few leaders who value truth, justice and transparency of the party.  But these good politicians often fall into political fraud and media conspiracy and lose the trust of the people.  People's trust in politics is decreasing because it is full of lies.   Politics is mainly for the interests of people, there should be no place for lies here, if the primacy of truth cannot be ensured, then politics will never work for the real improvement of people.

Politics and propaganda are alike. If you don’t know how to use it,it will be very difficult to for to succeed in the politics or political arena that’s why you see them enforcing all types of lies just to sway electorate on their side.

Politics and lies are just like 5&6 telling lies is the primary objective of a politician, during election champagne some many lies will be told but when power is been given to them reverse become the case.
This lies among politician has circulated  both our local and international politics.

Politician assume that if they don't lie during election champagne they won't be given the required mandate to lead the people, as the masses also like to be told lies before they can believe at the end if it all none of the promises made by this so called politicians won't be fulfilled.
And unfortunately people who do politics now don't have human feelings after telling the poor masses much lies and they enter seat and allow the poor masses to suffer and die of hunger and starvation.

Hey Odohu, this topic gets my attention though I don't think i do regular post in this section but immediately click on the politics & society I saw this post. From my understanding, politics has been since from man creations (origin of man) and it's something that seems to be in a man and like we know politics is a game which involves lying to gain interest and the process of trying to convince people with sweets words, it creates more room to lie in other to obtain such power(point of interest).

In power you will see the eagerness and inquisitiveness to have willing power to control and subjugate people under them. But the bitter things about politics is that they are usually known as people who aren't sincere or that can do all things be it staining their hands to acquire such power, they would do it with all necessary measures. That is why we must learn to avoid politicians and if you watch carefully I barely post here as I do dislike politics. In all, all politicians are liers and they don't keep to their promises.
