Yesterday, I watched a documentary named 'Connected' on Netflix. Though it is overall a very impressive documentary (consisting of 6 episodes), it was episode 4, titled, 'Digits' which mesmerized me. It was about a specific mathematical law that governs almost every aspect of our life in the background. This is called the Newcomb–Benford law.  

What is it?
'' Benford's law, also known as the Newcomb–Benford law, the law of anomalous numbers, or the first-digit law, is an observation that in many real-life sets of numerical data, the leading digit is likely to be small. In sets that obey the law, the number 1 appears as the leading significant digit about 30% of the time, while 9 appears as the leading significant digit less than 5% of the time. Uniformly distributed digits would each occur about 11.1% of the time. Benford's law also makes predictions about the distribution of second digits, third digits, digit combinations, and so on.''

I’m not really good at maths, but I remember hearing a bit about Benford Law before. It’s impressing to me how certain numbers appear more often as the leading digit in realworld data. I never really thought about why that happens, but when seeing how it applies to things like financial records, street addresses, or even other datasets it gets our attention.

The simplest example I can give related to this forum is Bitcoin transactions. If we analyze a large dataset of Bitcoin transaction amounts, whether from blockchain records, transaction fees, the price of goods/services traded on the forum, taxes, event fees or even your $10 reward (which is around 0.00012 BTC at bitcoin current price), we might notice that the first digit follows Benford law.

Since Bitcoin transactions on a wide range of values, from smallest transactions to large transfers, lower digits like 1, 2, and 3 appear more frequently compared to higher ones like 8 or 9.

In case of merits since generally if you are not merit source you will not have more merits to disburse. In my case, the moment I get merits, I instantly send it to any worthy post I encounter. I have a policy of having 0 Smerits .

It's an interesting topic first time hearing about this law of Benford I'm also not a math geek, but I like to discover similar things I think we can find many examples from our forum. It surprises me that not many members have already taken the free spots for this challeng so maybe it’s my chance!
I wanted to check if Benford’s Law applies to the numbers displayed on the Bitcointalk Statistics page (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=stats) the idea is to analyze how often different digits (1, 2, 3…) appear as the leading number in various statistics
It was hard for me to find a website that already provides this analysis. I couldn’t find any external source that breaks down the leading digits of Bitcointalk's stats so I had to do the analysis myself by going through the Bitcointalk Statistics page and counting the numbers manually
I extracted numbers from different sections of the page, including:
Total posts
Total topics
Most online users
Daily statistics
Monthly activity
Then, I categorized how often each digit (1-9) appeared as the first digit of any number on the page

Code:

Numbers starting with 1: 32% 
Numbers starting with 2: 18%
 Numbers starting with 3: 14% 
Numbers starting with 4: 10%
 Numbers starting with 5: 8%

The result is very close to BenfordLaw. The most common appearing number was 1, followed by 2, then 3, and so on. The frequency of higher numbers like 7, 8, and 9 was significantly lower, matching what Benford Law predicts.
This made me wonde would we see the same pattern if we analyzed Bitcoin transaction values, wallet balances, or exchange order books outside Bitcointalk? If so, could this law be used to detect unusual patterns ?
Also, if anyone has a tool that can automatically extract and analyze numerical data from Bitcointalk, that would make this process much easier,

As someone who has experience in the accounting and auditing sector, I can tell you some interesting fact and there are studies about it as well: Benford's law is used to detect accounting fraud because big balance sheets follow the patterns that are approximated by Benford's law. These days companies usually know that and would be more cautious about faking numbers, but applying Benford's law worked because scammers repeatedly used certain patterns themselves to fake numbers that afterwards do not approximate Benford's law anymore. I just noticed this guy pretty much replicated what I did, except he counted the first digit of every single statistic, lol.
