Who’s more credible to give advice about gambling -- gamblers or non-gamblers?

Only people who have gone through the pain of addiction can better understand how harmful addiction can be, what the best way to heal is, and everything they went through during their illness. So, if someone is addicted to gambling, the best option is to seek medical help and talk to people who were addicted and managed to recover. This helps a lot, because the person begins to realize that it is possible to overcome the addiction. Even doctors bring people who have been cured to give lectures to people who are in the early stages of addiction.

I think if it's about the emotion and real advice, you'll feel those who have been through addiction from gamblers that have been through.

But don't say that the non gamblers are non credible for that. There's probably a part of their lives that they have gambled and simply quiet quit afterward.

With that small experience they have, it might help them to give good advice as well. If they have zero gambling experience but their advice make sense, why to ignore and not accept good tips from them?

there are help groups like this where they go around share their stories and this helps one another point out their problems and make the best decision moving forward sometimes even just talking about it helps greatly so seek out people who have gone through the same experiences

So let’s say I’m a gambler, and I got addicted to it. Now, if I’m looking for advice or trying to change, who do you think is more credible to listen to?

Someone who’s been there, actually gambled, went through the same addiction, and somehow managed to stop?
Or someone who’s never gambled at all, just heard bad stories, and will tell you “don’t gamble, it ruins lives”?

I mean, sure, both sides have a point… but can someone who never touched a slot or placed a bet really understand the kind of pull gambling has?

What do you guys think, whose advice would you take more seriously?

Obviously someone who has gone through gambling addiction and managed to escape off it has much more to say and more accurate information on dealing with it than someone who have never gambled in their life.
If I was addicted to gambling and wished to stop and change my life positively, then I would give more credit to the person who was a former gambling addict, instead of someone who have stigma against gambling and does not how gambling actually works and develops into addiction.

Just my two satoshis, but this seems to be rather a matter of common sense: Always people with experience in a specific matter have more valuable advice than inexperience people.

These kind of groups and communities really help a lot to those struggling gamblers of trying to do their best of getting out of their addiction.

The main point and goal of these groups is to give help and counselling to those who are looking for advices. Sometimes, they want to remain anonymous because they don't want anyone to know of their struggles.

And with these groups, they're helping with it. I think that a psychologist without gambling experience is also going to be a credible person to give help to the needy gamblers.

What do you guys think, whose advice would you take more seriously?

There is this popular saying which is Experience is the Best Teacher...... In respect of what is been discussed, my interpretation to the saying is that: it is what one has experienced In life that advices and teaches that person. And when they learn from life experience, they are best equipped to advice or teach others from making that same mistakes they made.......

In the case of gambling, someone who hasn't even gambled in his/her  entire life wouldn't even understand the pull and  domination that gambling can have over a person, so even if he is advising a gambler, his advices would only be based on speculations and imagination. But then on the other hand it is more smoother and easier for aformer addicted gambler who has now kept gambling aside to give advice unto a gambler suffering from addiction. This is coz the advise that the former gambler will give to the present gambler will be advises and lesson that are based on realityy.

You don't necessarily need to be an addict before giving someone who's addicted an advice, because you don't know if it's your advice that would save him or her and get them out from the conditions, however experienced persons still remains the best person to advice you in this situation, and if the person successfully conquered or come out of the situation, but experience can also come from you knowing someone who's an addict, a brother, sister or a friend, dad ,mom ,siblings etc that has been an addict before and you have the knowledge about how they solved their problem, also it can be from reading books or research.

It is the gambler as they have their first-hand experience and so he already encountered the many faces of gambling. For non-gamblers, they can't give better insights as they don't know what to do when it comes to facing the challenges brought by gambling.

Ok... Can I answer the "both"?
I think the most valuable thing is when experience and lucidity meet on the same opinion and this can come from both those who have played and those who have never bet with money.

Look... a former player that can control themselves has the merit of experience... they know the weight of impulsive bets, the regret of lost bet and also the momentary pleasure after a big win, right? But experience alone does not guarantee clarity, because only those who have never bet could have a more rational view of the game without the influence of the "psychological" effects that adrenaline exerts on those who gamble routinely.

I think it is a good comparison with to a doctor... would you prefer someone who only sees in an office, knows a lot of theory and is empathetic when dealing with people, or a doctor with a lot of technical knowledge but is harsh and ignorant when dealing with people?

Anyway... I think it Is more valuable to always listen to both sides and know how to separate the benefits of each.

Both have value, but experienced gamblers often give more practical advice since they understand risk, emotion, and bankroll swings firsthand. Non-gamblers may offer a clearer outside view on discipline and limits though. The best insight usually comes from mixing both perspectives. Do you think emotional control matters more than strategy here?

Very interesting and that right sir, the answer is who is the most experienced/former gambler and has been playing for a long time and then managed to quit. Personally, I would listen more to an older person because they know more than someone new and than gives them advice at some point but then he cheaters get caught playing again after advising someone on the matter.

If the ex tells the story of his journey, especially from a personal perspective, after realizing how much time and money he wasted and how he struggled to break out of that cycle, it's not as simple as saying, "I'm quitting tomorrow morning and not playing anymore." it is very appropriate that we listen otherwise the same thing will happen to us in the end.

Following the advice of those who have already overcome gambling addiction is, for me, the most sensible path. These people know exactly what it's like to go through it and, more importantly, how they managed to overcome it. Having experienced the difficulties firsthand, they are the best placed to offer real advice and show the best paths to overcome this challenge.

This one of course. It's easy to say things but I think those who took that road is way more credible to advice rather those who just naysayers that say things randomly. I'd rather not quit if someone advising me to quit doesn't even walk that road. Yeah they can be right but they'll probably wouldn't understand if they're on that situation.
