Who’s more credible to give advice about gambling -- gamblers or non-gamblers?

So let’s say I’m a gambler, and I got addicted to it. Now, if I’m looking for advice or trying to change, who do you think is more credible to listen to?

Someone who’s been there, actually gambled, went through the same addiction, and somehow managed to stop?
Or someone who’s never gambled at all, just heard bad stories, and will tell you “don’t gamble, it ruins lives”?

I mean, sure, both sides have a point… but can someone who never touched a slot or placed a bet really understand the kind of pull gambling has?

What do you guys think, whose advice would you take more seriously?

Both have value, but experienced gamblers often give more practical advice since they understand risk, emotion, and bankroll swings firsthand. Non-gamblers may offer a clearer outside view on discipline and limits though. The best insight usually comes from mixing both perspectives. Do you think emotional control matters more than strategy here?

I think it’s better if the person can really relate, you know the ones who can truly understand you are those who’ve been through the same experience. so if I had to choose, I’d listen to someone who’s been addicted to betting, managed to get out, and learned from it because that kind of advice has real value.

As for me, I’ve been addicted before but was able to recover. That’s why I’m willing to give advice, especially to family members who gamble or might get hooked in the future. They say prevention is better than cure, but it’s not always practiced, so if I can help even a little, I will.

Because gambling has always been perceived negatively, especially because of the dangers of addiction, anyone offering advice has influence, even if they don't gamble, because almost everyone, even laypeople, consider gambling bad.

However, if you want good advice, I think it's best to get it from someone who has experienced addiction and succeeded. They'll be offering advice based on their own experience, which is more likely to work because they're the ones who have proven it.

Those who do not gamble will only know the negative impacts of gambling without personally risking their money. Someone who has experiences like yours and has recovered will feel more comfortable for to you talk to about the gambling addiction you are experiencing.
I mean, not only will their opinion be good for you, but the process of talking with someone who has gone through similar addiction experiences will certainly be more engaging for you.

No one is more credible to give advice both the gamblers or non- gamblers deserve the advice, but looking at it in the other way round I think non-gamblers is likely to need the advice the most since they're yet to start gambling so is good to educate them more about gambling so that they won't walk into the space to start from where other gamblers ended thier mistakes. As for those people who are already in that space of course they also need some advice so as to avoid repeating that same mistake they have been making but go limit from it and start being discipline.

If that's the case, it's much better to listen to advice from people who have been addicted but still managed to quit. Since they have experience and understand firsthand how difficult it is to break free from addiction, they can share their experiences and what really helped them stop their addiction. For those who have never gambled at all, they won't relate to the problems addicts face, so they might only give advice based on what they've heard. They won't understand the emotional stress addicts face, so they end up just judging without offering meaningful advice.

Gambling is deep so are their experiences different. In gambling whatever you could be facing would be well understood by the person who has been there before than someone who has never gambled before, although he could give advice based on what he has heard from people or read from news about gambling but he would never passed the real experience to you because he has never gambled to know how you feels while gambling and the reason for your addictions, although someone has never gambled could actually pass senses into you but it wouldn't be as someone who has already gained the experience about addictions.

Both have a level of knowledge to advise. One will be based on practical knowledge and that who has not gambled before would be based on evidence of the knowledge of what was told and seen. So now it now depends on the person who is seeking for the advise. For me, I would prefer the gambler addict who has changed from his gambling habit because he would show practical loses and practical winnings compared together for the result. Someone who has not gambled before would only be giving advise from emotion and it may not really sink in your brain as you would feel they are not competent to give such advise.

With someone who has seen it all in gambling, he would guide you on the ways to gamble if you want to continue taking into account his losing times and winning times. On the other hand, he would also guide on how to escape from addiction.

This applies not only to gambling, but for everything - take advice of someone who had practical experience than of someone who knows only theory. A person with any, negative and positive experience can always tell more than someone who only read or saw (such person can give only overall ideas, such as "have self-control, but what is self-control in gambling that person cant explain? how to improve it? how to test if it works? how to be sure that what you do is actually involves self-control?). Someone without gambling addiction experience, can make cure processes take longer, or even make worse.

Some people like to learn from others, and don't necessarily have to have first hand experience to know what's up.

The answer is very obvious mate, you should listen to those individuals who have been in that kind of situation before and was able to get out of it and now totally sober and could be going in public to speak about the bad effect of gambling. For those who haven't experience it, they might tell you just generic excuses or reasons why you should quit. Even if they are professional or medical helper, still the best advise should come from those who have been in that kind of hole and was able to get out.

And that individual might tell you real horror stories that you can only imagine that will happen to you in the future if you didn't stop. Or maybe the worst of it all, going to jail or someone close to the gambler died because of his gambling addiction.

I think you’re mature enough to know who can really help you. But someone who has experienced gambling addiction and managed to overcome it is usually more credible, because they can relate to what you’re going through. You can have a real heart-to-heart talk, and you’ll probably learn something because you’re more willing to listen.

I have been addicted to gambling before, but I will recommend someone like me to give the advice instead but I do not know if other addicts are getting addicted to gambling just the way that I got addicted. It all started from chasing money through gambling and that was the cause of my addiction. Also I know what to tell gambling addicts to discourage them from such an irresponsible habit.

Someone that is not addicted to gambling can also give advice but I think my advice will far better and I know how people can stop being addicted to gambling if the cause of their addiction about chasing money.

I will prefer listening to the person who has been through it and managed to get over with his addiction. The person who have gone through gambling addiction will speak with facts and practical experience, what he suffered from addiction, also share his recovery procedures with you. Unlike non gambler who will be speaking based on assumptions because of the hatred he has for gambling because someone else told him gambling is bad.

Ill rather take an advice from a gambler than take any advice from a non-gambler. Non-gambler has nothing to offer because they have no experience. A typical example is someone who know nothing about driving a car teaching you how to because they see it on mobile games or movies. A gambler would only share an advice to you out of the experience he gained while gambling over the years he has spend in it. There must be something that will be relatable to what he say, and you can learn one or more things from him.

This is like asking whether would you get diagnosed by someone who never went to medical school. Of course go listen to someone who has been through the same thing as you because they know what it is like to be in your position unlike someone who's never gambled they would most likely just spew nonsense and their opinions would have come from judgement and assumptions only.

I think the best choice to listen to is those who have been on the same page.

Gambling addicts who have somehow recovered and are now living a normal life again. Then, those who are on the brink of becoming a gambling addict but managed to control it after learning their lesson that it can become addictive at some point in their life if they continue it.

It will be difficult to listen to a person who has not experienced it. There's a chance they will just tell logical reasons, but they won't really understand what the gambling addict is going through.
