Can We Really Mine Crypto on Phones or Is it just Hype?

Normally for crypto mining it required special devices and i think it is near to impossible to mining using smartphone because smartphone has limited features which cannot be used for mining especially for long term and indeed some projects have claiming their coins can be mined used the smartphone but i think this is only a promotion from the devs because they want their coins is getting popular and their project will be successful

For an example several years ago there is a project called Pi network that this is very hype even some people in my country have decide to collect the coins from their smartphone and they were spend years to mine the coins but when this coins get listen into the market they were dissapoint because apparently it wasting their time and the coin prices is not worth to their efforts

The only coin give profit for what so called mining is Pi coin, but don't get deceive on it since what they do its not like those traditional mining that you think since you need to do something to generate some results on their app.

But others? I think they are just offer fake promises to their prospects and they are just trying to sell the idea of its easy to mind in their phones while in reality its not.

If you have seen something like this better avoid and just go with top altcoins in the market. To many ponzi operators running around which their intention is to scam not giving any revolutionize platform and profit to their investors.

Their 'mine' is pretty laughable. Usually have to watch an ad but one could always minimize the app right after tapping on the button.

The intensity of the hype surrounding that Pi project was incredible. Just imagine for 6 years, they convinced countless people about their coins, to the point where it became cult-like.
Many had already quit and forgotten about Pi until suddenly, when news broke that it would be listed on Bitget, their community regained spirit.

Then that hype-style enthusiasm resurfaced people claiming Pi would "surpass Bitcoin" (which was obviously just pure hype), pushing the price up to $3 before it crashed down to $0.24.
And now, aside from Pi, I think I know of another mobile mining coin that's probably Verus Coin, though I'm not entirely sure.

Would could remember years ago when people talking about PI to be faulty when miners were using phones to mine, and then users on the forum were saying, phone doesn't have the capacity to mine and that, should be done by laptop and mining farm.

When PI network got listed on few major exchange sometimes ago and started trading, they changed their tongue to "I know PI will do more better, this and that.

Many beginners often see mobile apps that claim one can "mine" crypto on phone. even i also liked the idea at first, but after careful observation or learning more, i realized that most people misunderstand how it really works.

A real mining needs strong computing power to secure blockchain and also process transactions. A phone do not have enough power or such capacity to compete with real mining hardware. So if an app shows that you are "mining" without using much battery, without heat, and without slowing your device, then that is not real "mining" or probably not doing anything.

Instead, some of this apps are only giving you tokens that they created for their own project. The problem is that many of these tokens never even get listed on real exchange. So your balance might just look bigger everyday, but you cannot sell or withdraw it. Some apps even delay withdrawal for weeks, months or never allow at all.

I personally tried Acurast. Yes it does allow users to earn some crypto by running tasks on their phone, but the earnings are very small. You need a lot of patience  before you see any value. it is quite interesting for learning, but not so reliable for someone who needs urgent money.

If a phone mining app:

    1. has no transparent team or real product,
    2. asks you to invest money before earning,
    3. promises very high rewards,
    4. or has a token that is not listed anywhere...
    
...then it is better to stay away from such.

Well phone mining can actually still help beginners understand crypto, but it is not a realistic way to make income for me personally. People should do more research and be careful before trusting any app that looks like an "easy money" opportunity.

It's all a scam. Most (if not all) mining apps are simply "simulating" the mining process. It's not the real thing. Projects like Electroneum, and Pi have this concept. There used to be PoW cryptocurrencies with mobile-friendly mining algorithms, but for some reason, they didn't take off. I'm talking about oldies such as Aeternity (AE) and Magi (XMG). Not sure if Monero and its variants (like Wownero) can be mined on a phone. They are CPU-friendly, but that doesn't mean you can easily mine with a low-powered device such as a smartphone or tablet.

For now, mining on mobile devices remains a niche. Who knows? Maybe some developer (or group of developers) will make a new coin with a PoW algorithm that's mobile-friendly? One can only hope...

There's no real mining in phone as their processor would be less efficient in doing algorithms, it would heat up and the battery would be dead really soon.
Almost all of the mining app you see are virtual mining. There are a few that does real mining but not recommended to run them on device like phone.
Virtual mining gives you the feel of real mining but rather than mining the coin, they'll consider your screen time or some of them counts your distance traveled or make you walk to some place and give you points or coins. Most of coins provided by these apps are worthless and minute but they are also harmless so you try them out.

Whenever I see a project that pushes the "mining on mobile devices" narrative, I immediately put the project in my mental trashbin because the concept is flawed. You can't mine on mobile devices because it's not built to be used aa such. Even if we eventually get to do it in the future, the tech is not available yet so any project riding on that narrative is a likely scam.

There was a project a few years ago called Electroneum that pushed mobile narrative very hard. It died a long time again. It just doesn't work at all.

It reminds me when there were some applications on the Play Store which claimed one could actually generate some significant income through them as they were used to mine satoshis on ones phone. Fortunately, many of those applications have been withdrawn from the Play Store and are nowhere to be seen anymore.

Obviously those apps which claim to use phones to mine are likely scams which only offer revenue to the owner of the application itself, instead for those who try to monetize their time. In the case one manages to actually mine with one phone, then one would be actually losing money from it, because the profit will neve be grater than the value of the phone, which is being wasted doing a task which was not designed for.

Yes, they're just all app rewards and you're not truly mining crypto in it. Instead, you're just giving them engagement and power to show to the advertisers that they've got a lot of users that have been blinded that they're mining crypto and getting rewards. The activeness that they are contributing to the app makes them earn those rewards but it's not really mining that they think of. I didn't do that and not going to waste my phone's battery in it.

It depends on the PoW algorithm. If it's one that focuses on low-powered devices, you can mine crypto efficiently on your phone without "burning" it up. The only algorithm that I can think of is Magi's (XMG) M7M PoW algorithm. It has a system where the higher your hashrate, the lower the block reward will be. This penalizes big miners, while rewarding "the little guy".

While the concept is great, the coin isn't listed on any major crypto exchange. There's only one exchange trading XMG and liquidity is quite low. So you see, cryptocurrencies that can be mined on a phone aren't very popular these days. At least, you can stake coins on your phone. Better something than nothing, right?

These platforms usually reward users with their native tokens and not actually cryptos which can be traded for real money so this is just like a marketing hype for them.

To be real, phone will never be able to mine even if you have a high end phone. All phones have lower computing power which makes them almost impossible to mine. Even if they are able to, they would take days to solve one single algorithm which will be worth nothing and the user can never be rewarded. I agree with you that the platforms which make us able to mine from phone are just using advertisements to engage users and generate profits for themselves.
