THE ROLE OF SPORTS IN NATIONAL PEACE

I think sport plays a huge role in uniting people of different races and cultures. Take the Olympic Games for example, nations all around the world come together to participate in the games and for that time period they forget their differences and see each other as humans pushing each other to be better.

That's the perfect example. During Olympics, it seems that every country is competing with each other. But we see on how countries are preparing for the games that are involved in there because they want to make their countries proud of the representative that they're sending to compete.
And with all of the participants, after the competition they become friends as if nothing has happened. That's how it unites every person and representative for each country that's part of it.

I saw Barca and Madrid fans are mocking each other everyday. Things also went the same when it comes to the Chelsea and Arsenal fans.
It's right sport is unite us, but sometimes, it's also divide us when it comes to the club context. So that statement is not really right for me.

Well, in a sensible city or place or world, sports games are supposed to foaster and promote peace and cordiality between cities, communities, states and even countries, I don't know about other countries but here in Africa, sports is gradually resorting to a means through which countries beef at each other, compare themselves and citizens from both countries have something to by the use of words, attack each other with, this ought not to be so for this is what sports was suppose to do..

The world cup tournaments I believe was formed as a means of bringing the entire world into one place of unity, peace and strength amongst all together, but in some tournaments, some countries use sports as a form of fighting between each other..
I remember one time my country and South Africa played football against each other, I was online on X and the hate speech from both sides were really disappointing to be honest, football as a sports is supposed to unite us and not divide us but unfortunately, some people don't know this..

It's true that people from two conflicting regions can temporarily reconcile to support their national teams. However, on a different level, due to ego and fanaticism, sports like football can become a source of division or conflict. I think this happens frequently in many places, even though we recognize that some parties benefit from it. I think the fanaticism of Real Madrid versus Barcelona supporters is a very relevant example, and the two supporters may never reconcile.

Absolutely, sport can help sincerely establish peace — it isn't just to serve as entertainment. If communities or rival groups bets as one, it supports teamwork, respect, and communication rather than conflict. Sporting events equally provide people with a shared identity, removing their focus away from difference to common goals. At the national levels, diplomacy of sports assist to ease tensions, as in when countries compete with peace rather than fighting.
True, not all matches owns deeper purpose, most times it only for fun, though sports usually turns the most easy bridge for dialogue, unity, and recovery after crisis.

It's the same with music and food. Sports and of the same hobby of different nations can really be a way to make peace treaty. Because that's how we're connected to each other. If both leaders are a fan of football, they'll mostly talk about how good their favorite teams are until they get each other's favor because they have common interest. So, that's about the interest that the political leaders have, while there are other interests that sets the boundaries for all of the territories and other nations. But we can conclude that sports is one way to unite people of different nations.

If sportsman from those countries meet at any competition, they dont shake hand usually or dont try to congratulate the winner.

But actually they don't need to do those things since in spirit of sportsmanship they supposed to be respecting all their opponents. But we cannot really take out the possibilities that there are some people take everything heavy and don't like to threat their opponents well especially if their country is facing a serious situation.

Good example. That is what I was talking about. Conflict between two nations, is not a conflict between to persons, that is easy to solve during sport competition or event, shake hand and turn friends. I often heard how to persons who hated each other, had a fight, smashed each other faces, then shook hands and became friends. But nations? I doubt that sport will help. Usually conflict between nations is too wide. And if you can settle it with one person or team, others might not accept that as truce.

Yes I have seen this locally in my city, where the next city had to challenge my own city to a match, it was a fun idea but it doesn't always work like you all think, most of the time these people had violence desire against each other.
The day of the match can turn violent if one hit the other and one believed that the referee failed to do his job, they will start aiming to hurt eachother and try to hide it without the referee attention.
If there is a way they can make it happen in a happy way without any barbarian mindset then it should work and set peace between the challengers, this is very common in India villages where the winner have to take a gold Cup home until after a year where they have to challenge him to either retrieve the cup or he retains it again.

To be sincere Intra community sports or community footballing is something that has units families and villages together, I can sight for an example within my locality when there were so much dispute it was through footballing they all  united together and everyone stop fighting and killing each others. Yes, except for those nations that doesn't want to involved themselves with football or that doesn't like unity either due to a particular region they are trying to have it where they could start fighting with the next country just for them to have portion of areas or lands.

Yes sporting activities do play a role in bringing about peace to communities an nations, it is totally capable and has also happen before.
in 1971 during the world table tennis championship, sport brought about peace after the US and china has been in war for over 20 years.

this was a crucial step that paved the way for high level diplomat discussions. it demonstrated a mutual desire for improved relations and led to a lot of benefits for the both nations.

Do you think that a friendly football game can end Middle Eastern conflict between Israel and Palestine? Let them have a match; the winner takes Gaza strip. Do you think that the game really would solve anything? I am 100% sure that even if they end with a draw, teams and fans will start fighting. I really wish that sport would help to solve national conflicts, but as far as I see, sport can only help to stop or pause little local conflicts.

Well, I don't see how it brings peace to a community

Many of community clashes and disagreements between people and communities is as a result of them viewing themselves as different from one another, on the platform of sports, that is identifying a game that both communities can enjoy, It can prove that they are not so different from each other since they both enjoy the same sports. If communities identify that they are not so different from each other, it could bring the platform for them to seek more ways in which they are alike. Sports is not the final solution to bring peace, but it can be a headway to it.

Normally, that will happen in some cases and among some persons from those different areas but the situation in what I explained is that, there is still usually conflicts among many of them after the sports but just on the day of the sports everyone would look as if they are one. Maybe it does in other jurisdictions.
