Coinbase.com Distributes Free Bitcoins to College Students

In one of the most progressive steps to expand Bitcoin’s territory, popular Bitcoin online wallet Coinbase.com has decided to give away free bitcoins to college students. To avail this gesture, students are only required to make an account on Coinbase.com using an ‘.edu’ email address.

The news comes right after the recent announcement of two MIT students that raised $100 worth Bitcoins for the undergraduates in the campus. In their announcement, Coinbase itself has mentioned the aforementioned fundraiser to be its sole inspiration. “We were inspired by this project and hope we can contribute to the growing interest of bitcoin among college students,” it said.

Keep in mind that they have a new TOS that says you have to pay or transfer funds ONLY to other coinbase customers. This limits its usefulness.

New TOS also says they can now process chargebacks. No chargebacks is actually one of the strengths of bitcoin. This lowers transaction cost so that vendors could offer discounts to bitcoin payers. Ugh....

Finally, new TOS requires binding arbitration, no doubt with an arbitration company that they pay, so that the arbitrage firm is biased.

Yes... it is a far-sighted initiative, as they are targeting the college students. Even when the Coinbase started its operations in the beginning of 2012, there was a similar promotion.

I will definitely have to tell my daughters about the offer. Anything to spread the word about bitcoin. Nice gesture and I suppose marketing tool by Coinbase!
