Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

I really hope there is a miscalculation there a 400% increase is too much.

It's based on 8 blocks only. Meaningless for now.

ignore the estimate. it's always way out just after the difficulty change.

For the hundredth time:  The websites showing network hash rate are based off the time to solve the last X blocks.  The estimate network hash rate is always screwy after a difficulty change.  Wait 24 hours before your head explodes.

Same goes for the next difficulty estimate.

Huge increase happens all the time after difficulty change. It is due to the way it's calculated. With time it will adjust to a more realistic one.

Anyhow, my prediction for the next difficulty is ~800000

i hope u can bear with me on two questions :

1. if the estimate hash rate is calculated based on time to solve the blocks, wouldn't it show low after increase in difficuty , i mean if a site knew that with diff 1 it took 10 minutes to slove a block, and suddenly it took 20 minutes. then wouldn't it show decrease in hashrate since it still think it's old diff of 1 ?

2. in slush pool Connected workers now also shows like almost a double from yesterday, is it also connected with the same issue or just slush pool gained new miners ?

Thanks again and pardon my questions if stupid

I think you have that backwards.  It assumes the last block completed is at the same difficultly as the current block (434k instead of 244k) and builds estimates based on that.  Is that correct?

The difficulty has risen, but the exchange rate has risen as well. The current magic number threshold is about 1023 shares/USD, compared to 735 shares/USD on May 20. So yes, mining is less profitable now than it was earlier. But it's not that much less profitable.

it has in the past. the last time was 25th of March 2011.

I'm sure it'll happen again in the future when the current exponential growth slows down but hard to know when that'll be. Not in the immediate future is my guess

Clearly it's a minimal amount of data but, we've seen 13 blocks in 68 minutes since the difficulty increase. In the 68 minutes immediately prior we also saw 13 blocks.

What's the deal?
