Hey guys,

I'm working on a study at MIT with the goal of doing an economic analysis of the Bitcoin marketplace. Do any of you know of existing existing resources/projects/studies that:

1. compile known merchants/services and the public keys associated with them

and/or

2. map known public keys to geographic regions (cities, countries, etc)

I think it would be pretty awesome to study not just the growth of bitcoin as a whole, but specifically the growth of bitcoin in different sectors (gambling, financial services, consumer goods, etc) and different regions. Thanks! Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Some sites like blockchian.info provide some information about some public addresses and associated transactions but it isn't totally reliable.  Some of it is estimated based off where blockchain first observed a transaction and other information is annotated by users.

1) you can get lists of merchants from https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Real_world_shops or many other places, but they do not list the addresses associated with the merchants

2) You can get the source code to the open source project getaddr.bitnodes.io and modify it so that an address can be mapped to a node's ip which you can then map to geographic regions.

Otherwise, there are not any projects that I know of that do what you ask.
