ELMIRA, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say they've charged 19 students, 18 of them girls, in connection with a brawl that broke out at an upstate New York high school.

Local media report that the Chemung County Sheriff's Office announced the arrests Wednesday, a week after a large fight occurred shortly before noon March 18 in the main lobby area at Elmira High School.

Officials say the fight appears to have been planned. The melee led to the school being placed on lockdown for a short period.

I wish they'd mention more specifics about the demographics involved here and whether this was gang related. I mean, you don't lock down a school for teenage valley girls bickering at each other.

"Planned brawls" (gang warfare), "lockdowns", schools sound more and more like prisons every day.

Why do you suppose that is?

Things like this seems to be happening a lot lately. You can hardly browse YouTube without being overloaded with videos of teens brawling and/or attacking other teens or even the elderly for no reason at all. It is sickening really.

Believe it or not this was normal at one of my schools and at one time there was one that was so bad they had to bring in riot police to control everybody, yes, schools are prisons, I don't care who tries to defend it, if they were such wonderful places they wouldn't need to make education mandatory and force children to stay there now would they? The school I was in that was particularly bad even had the fucking layout of a prison I kid you not, adding to that, there were extremely high fences that they put in place around the playgrounds and they put security cameras at the entrance, everything they told us of course, was for our own protection, in reality, all that kind of thing is designed for is to keep people in.

People who defend the current school systems are ignorant and naive bastards trying to enforce their ( lack of ) worldview on everybody else. Now it's all starting to spill over the way because of how isolated and controlled the students will feel, school shootings and mass playground fights are just the beginning, now you all should see why I turned to Anarchism, the extreme alternative is much, much worse.

how did i know it was gonna be black people just from the title

Be radical, have principles, be absolute, be that which the bourgeoisie calls an extremist: give yourself without counting or calculating, don't accept what they call ‘the reality of life' and act in such a way that you won't be accepted by that kind of ‘life', never abandon the principle of struggle.

The real reason military troupes are sent into the big cities is NOT to calm the gangs. It is so the troupes can learn REAL warfare.

Reading that one actually left me in tears several times because of my own awful experiences in school. I also recommend Ken Robinson's work, here's a taste: http://www.ted.com/talks/ken_robinson_changing_education_paradigms

Ken Robinson is fantastic actually, he goes into a huge amount of detail on why the education system is failing children.

How are demographics relevant at all? A brawl is a brawl. If it was gang members bickering at each other, they wouldn't have locked down the school either. It wasn't locked down because of the demographics of who was fighting. It was locked down because it was brawl.

I love 'Pink Floyd' and I can't even listen to or watch 'The Wall' without an overwhelming and intense feeling of sadness coming over me throughout that album/movie.

Corporations want predictable consumers and reliable workers, and so it's the job of schools to squash creativity and promote mediocrity.

That might actually help to prevent suicidal maniacs from killing everyone. Children are becoming more aggressive these days. Now a teacher has to be worried that on one hand he may be accused by the child of using physical force or molesting (even worse) and on the other can end up being attacked.

The reason children are so aggressive now is because their lives are being consistently ruined by people who are claiming to help them, I ended up being fucking aggressive in these school systems as well and it's because not only as a child do you have to deal with other assholes trying to attack you or make your life miserable the teachers simply don't give a shit unless you start causing trouble or get 'bad' grades. To them, giving you knowledge has nothing to do with it, particularly here in the UK they're in teaching for the pensions so as long as everything looks shiny to the public in their schools they're happy and won't do fuck all to improve things for the students.

Why do you think that teachers in the UK ever only strike for pensions? It's just further proof that they don't give a fuck about education and are just giving lip service until they can retire by screwing over the children they clam to care about, the biggest joke is, these pensions are being paid for by the future of their students which they will be unable to pay off because they haven't taught them proper skills.

More guns / guards is not the solution to every problem.
If you have a man with a gun in every class, the message going to the students is that a gun is required to enforce your opinion.

Exactly and just to point out further you can bet there will be some psychopaths amongst those guards which will end up either shooting those children or using their guns to threaten them so they can abuse them.
