Antminer S3 / PSU problems

Hi everyone.

Please forgive the noobness of my enquiry, but I just bought an Antminer S3 to see if it was worthwhile investing in bitmining.  I looked at the guides posted, but managed to melt the power cable within 3 days of setting up the rig (which worked fine up to that point)!

I had read that two sets of y cables plugged into the antminer were preferable to the one set, but the Corsair CS550M only came with one 8 pin to 6 pin PCIE cable and I thought I'd give it a try.  The 8 pin socket on the PSU partially melted, and the cable is toast, but the PSU still works.

After reading some advice on another thread, I bought two male single 6 pin PCIE cables to 6 pin female, however I then found the Corsair CS550M has 3 female 6 pin sockets.  And there don't seem to be any 6 pin female to female cables on ebay or wherever.

If anyone could offer any advice, alternatives or suggestions, I would be grateful.  Thanks in advance

Looking at this PSU, I'm only seeing one 6-pin that is rated for PCI-e power, the rest is SATA/Accessories.  You're gonna have a bad time if you try to run a miner off those.

8 pin is only rated for 150w, a S3 pulls over 300.  You need to have separate cables for each side, don't mess with splitters.

I'd recommend going with a Corsair CX750, pretty good deal right now and plenty of overclocking headroom.  Probably a bit overkill, but it will last longer if it's not running at max.  

Edit: don't bother with Molex to PCIe adapters either, the wire coating literally burned off and that was just with a S1

Where did you read this?  I just don't see people pushing for the Y splitters.

Splitting PCI-e cords is not recommended, if you do it you need big guage wire.  Almost no manufacture ships a PCIe Y splitter that is up for amount of power most miners have going through it.  Also 8 pin to 6 pin again not good for miners.  Either of these most likely result in burning or other bad things.

I suggest going with a PSU that comes with enough PCIe cables and you don't need to use y splitters.  Also S3 only needs one on each blade unless you do overclocking.

There is EPS cable that come with the psu right? It's unused & you can buy EPS to PCIE converter. Or you can cut unused molex then solder them to PCIE cable.

This guy is new to mining and you want him to solder a power supply?  Well that's one way to burn your house down...

I tried to run a S1 blade off a 2 molex to PCI-e adapter and the rubber literally burned off the wire, smoke and all.

As for the EPS, that will be iffy.  It's only rated for 235 watts, and the adapter may or may not be good enough quality to handle the extra.  Plus he'll never be able to overclock if it does work.

It's not worth the potential $60 savings to damage your hardware, or worse

look that is not the way to go. here is a 55 dollar kit it will run your s-3 like a champ
