The American Political Proxy War Over Israeli Parliamentary Elections

Last week’s electoral sweep in Israel for incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his party, the Likud coalition, over Knesset member Isaac Herzog and his Labor based opposition coalition might appear on paper as just another overseas election to many American news audiences. A current events footnote, if you will.

But among America’s politically literate, the recent Israeli elections marked a Spring Break in the Dead Sea for America’s largely covert coalitions of clandestine consultant classes. It was a classic case of a cold war of sorts between the U.S. Democrat and Republican Parties. Many Republican operatives in the country favored Netanyahu’s ticket, while many Democrats kept busy attempting to elect Herzog’s.

The overwhelming consensus this writer noticed among attendees to last month’s annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) was that Israeli parliamentary elections were only the latest incarnation of an ongoing political proxy war between America’s two dominant parties and their operatives. Among many conference goers who were also destined for the Israeli-American Political Action Campaign (AIPAC) conference the following weekend, one pro-Scott Walker consultant I had the opportunity to chat with off the record in the lobby of National Harbor, Maryland’s Gaylord Hotel the first day of CPAC was very candid to acknowledge off the presence of Republican advisors then on the ground in Israel behind Bibi Netanyahu’s Likud Party.
