Tesla once again pushing the technology forward into the world, which is awesome, but the driverless car is not something i want to have in any near future.
When they rolled out their electric cars, they did a giant step in getting customers the same comfort and performance of a standard engine, and the adoption is rising every year because its a logical step to make,
but to put security of passengers in hands of a machine; its still to early to do that on roads, and i doubt there will be any AI that will have the ability to predict illogical moves of other human drivers along the way.
If we were to have all cars controlled by AI, that would make much more sence, but to mix them with unpredictable drivers..im not so sure thats a smart idea.

cheers

It's amazing to see how far this has come to. Google has supposedly managed to create autonomous car that are really reliable. It's really interesting to see all those concepts that could reshape the industry. I wonder how much it's going to take until the next generation of cars starts taking over.

Mercedes Self Driving Truck Driving Itself Mercedes Future Truck 2025 Commercial CARJAM TV 4K 2015
After watching the above video and seeing how they portray the truck driver as leisurely sitting back, enjoying his ipad, the reality of it hit me. There wouldn't be any driver at all.

So, there is also a sort of social dilemma to consider here, since this technology will obviously present a problem for a lot of people. There sure are a lot of jobs that require driving. No longer required by industry, as the demand for 'drivers' falls to the wayside (pardon the pun), cab drivers, bus drivers, transport truck drivers, etc. will be flocking in droves to unemployment centers, almost overnight, wondering what they will do next to make ends meet.

Sure I agree in this scenario a lot of jobs will be made obsolete. I suppose self-driving cars will be cheap, but not free. That money goes to the owner of the car I'm guessing? Leasing self-driving cars to use as taxis has got to be big business.

I will never buy a self-driving car, because I like the act of driving too much. I don't understand the appeal to a car that drives itself. It takes all the joy out of cars.

In the fast-approaching 'Internet of Everything' World you will not have a choice.  Probably 20 years out. Driving a car by steering wheel will become as archaic as using a Vic 20 to game on.

I would bet serious money it will never be mandated in the US. People won't tolerate losing such an essential freedom. Besides, I can't see companies being able to handle the potential liability. Any accident would forever be the fault of the car company now. Plus, in order for such a system to work, there would need to be a massive database that monitors and controls all traffic and has access to every car's location and destination in order to pre-plot any potential problems with other cars. If it didn't, cars would only be able to react to their immediate surroundings, which would be chaotic and self-defeating.

You could get your self driving car to become a taxi and make money for you when you are not using it! I assume the traditional taxi market would become obsolete if you could do this with self driving cars.
