Getting seriously pissed off with the amount of damage that can be done to this forum by 1 person with 20 alt accounts.

Jail needs to come back and some serious housekeeping needs to be done.

All I see in Wall observer these days is racism and defamation by a select few sockpuppets.

You've just described the majority of this site. There's more sock puppets here than there are real people.

I agree that there are many sockpuppets and newbie scammers, but unfortunately, a newbie jail turns away legit newbies, who are already discouraged by the 4 minute interval between posts. A newbie jail can do more harm than good, which is why I think it was taken away in the first place.

We have already talked about this things and it seems the newbie jail will not re-added again (I don't understand why, maybe because if it can't resolve the problem at all it is not better to add again this function).

Newbie jail is before my time, however my understanding is that you could only post in off topic and beginners/help until you had at least 4 posts and were online for 4 hours. I don't think that is the best solution to the problem of newbies posting nonsense.

I do think that our current setup that brand new members can post whatever garbage they want anywhere is probably not ideal either.

I might propose that brand new members need to be online for a shorter period of time (maybe 30 minutes or an hour) and only need to make one or two posts until they can post outside of restricted sections (maybe the sections can be expanded as well). This would stop farmers from posting absolute garbage in sections that are popular, would stop spammers from junking up "important" sections while it would not prevent legit new users from actually voicing their opinions and concerns.

You could also bypass newbie jail back then. I showed a mod my -OTC history and got out that day! I think it might have helped a little, but not enough to really matter.

Ha I also got scammed on my first day here! I did get my coins back though...

That does not matter. The newbie jail isn't intended for people like you.

This was discussed multiple times, but the staff does not seem to agree with the community. The forums are overflowing with fake registrations, which I've shown the other day. There were 20+ pages of new members before noon. Those were all definitely new people.  Roll Eyes

Agreed newbie jail should be brought back.

Would cut down on forum spam and scams. The idea that new people would be discouraged from pursuing Bitcoin because of newbie restrictions is ridiculous.

This is a big flaw in the trust system <> related with the newbie jail. I hope to see it back in the new forum software but it will be very "improbable".

If it doesn't resolve the problem (which it doesn't) then why re-add it? Making scammers or trolls make a few posts and wait a few hours isn't going to deter them.

The idea that newbie jail would cut down on spam and scams is more ridiculous. If it didn't stop them before why would it suddenly stop them now? Making them wait doesn't do anything apart from delay their activity for a few moments. Spammers and scammers won't care about any restrictions; they'll just wait them out whereas it is massively off-putting to the casual user so it's pointless.

Not sure if it would work, maybe. I had to go through newbie jail and while I didn't mind the wait I definitely had reasons to wait it out (I wanted to participate in some giveaways). Without a reason though it would have been much more discouraging and I probably just would have ended up going to reddit. If the community truly wants more people to join I don't think it is a good thing. Scammers can be dealt with in other ways hopefully.

I know it will not resolve the problem but I am sure that it will not make easy the "life" of those spammers and trolls. I think they will be tired and maybe they will stop to "farm/create & use" those accounts, or am I wrong (why not try again)?

It certainly won't make their lives easier but trolls and scammers are usually determined and restrictions are only a minor annoyance to them. Even bans don't usually stop them and they'll just move onto another account whereas your average user doesn't want to have to put up with aggressive time-consuming restrictions and will put many off from even bothering.

Maybe because the previous jail was flawed itself? Either increase mod activity or get a proper newbie jail for starters. Things haven't been really going as they should be around here these days.

At least do something about the trust spam coming from newbies. It's horrible and has been happening for a while now.

Newbie jail is a flawed idea in general but what do you suggest is a 'proper newbie jail' exactly? It's ok saying 'bring it back' but it's not going to return unless there's some good ideas and arguments to why it would work because it clearly didn't before. And trust isn't moderated but what would you suggest to stop abuse? Newbie feedback is untrusted anyway but limiting them to leave it just opens up newbs to be abused themselves.

Sorry I currently have no valid proposal that would work. I'm sure that this smart community could come up with something (although quite a good portion don't take part in the meta subforum). Well there could be a minimum (as in minimum logged in time or something) member limit, until which point he or she can't post trust. This should be implemented only to prevent trust spam from newly created account. Any prevention is better than none.

I made a post few days back and majority were against this quoting that all newbies aren't scammers, spammers and there was no solution to this problem. I don't know what's the harm in having few restrictions for newbies as they can be active here and then trade or leave feedback. Still people are saying newbies will spam the forum to increase their rank and so on  Huh

When everyone seems happy with the scamming going on, let all live in piece.  Undecided Undecided

There is no reasonable limit that we could place that would prevent spam. Newbie jail would create a 4 hour bottleneck, and I dont mean that everytime a spammer/scammer wanted to create a new account, it would take them an additional 4 hours, I mean as a whole working system, 4 hours after it was implemented, things would be back to how they are. Its just creating a que line which means that spammer who created 5 accounts, will just have to wait a few hours, and while they are waiting, why not make some more accounts so there is a steady stream?

The reason it wont be implemented back again, is it has provably done nothing to prevent people from making new accounts for a malicious purposes, but it does discourage actual new members to join.
