For freedom of speech and other bullshit.

It would be pretty fucking epic to have one of those even if the video serving is based on Torrents and only other systems do the rest of the job (keeping track of discussion, views, recommendations, categorization, poster Identity (and signature), proof of authenticity.

Syscoin has the best of Bitcoin and Ethereum in one place, it's merge mined with Bitcoin so it is plugged into Bitcoin's ecosystem and takes full advantage of it's POW while rewarding Bitcoin miners with Syscoin

Those videos take up a fair bit of disk space / bandwidth.   How would you propose a decentralized youtube before petabyte hard drives and gigabyte internet?

The video hosting would be P2P Torrents and the other systems (Authenticity, Author, Proof of Authorship, Impact, Proof of Authenticity) would be P2P chain.

Edit: No Petabyte drives needed. Today's tech would be sufficient.
Edit: Hosting torrents would mean that as long as a video is treasured by a community it will be served by it. Perhaps even in multiple resolutions, bitrates, versions, etc.
Edit: I don't understand why video makers on the Internet haven't used torrents and tips as much. Perhaps with decentralized money this model will make sense (with the audience giving some tips or funding certain projects as a source of revenue for the creators)
Edit: I understand that edit: edit: edit: is garbage. The proper thing would be to post in the OP.

P2P Torrents means the videos need to be stored somewhere.  That's a weak spot in a decentralized system.   Undecided

I like the idea though!  Just not sure how to implement.

Decentralizing won't be possible because Google won't allow for that to happen. I would say that what we need is a strong rival service for Youtube. Twich maybe or Vimeo? Its always good if there is a strong competition in the business but so far all the others are no where near Youtube.

YouTube is a huge mixed bag. There are tons of shit that I hate about it. The comment sections (no way to filter out the trolls). Postcounts, rankings, any system by which to roughly kick out all the trolls from the comments that you read.

The rating system is binary, more fit for machines than humans. No way to make groups, so that people in a group can do their own rating.

Totally sells it's content creator's butt-cheeks to corporations in any case of dispute (guilty until proven innocent if you're not a corporation) with the copyright system.
However it is the king.

People can (and some do) use torrents as well to spread their video clips. The number however is paltry because there is no platform.

Torrents are seen by the corporations and the authorities as evil, child-killing, pirating technology so perhaps that witch-hunt is partly to blame. Or perhaps the lack of systems to fund making the videos due to difficulties in receiving funds from the audience.

Agreed on the troll issue but right now I don't see any way to filter them out
Agreed on the rating system - it's useless. I remember couple years back that youtube had a star rating that was visible before you clicked the video but for some reason it had been changed.
Agreed on the copyright system but Youtube is the biggest video platform so they can allow themselves to be ignorant on that matter.

In the end it all comes down to this: People must start to use other video platforms so that there will be more competition, so youtube can no longer be ignorant. But the problem is also in Youtubers and crators - most of them are earning money on youtube which they cannot do on other platforms, so they got no interest in changing platforms, and that keeps viewers to stay with youtube.

Great idea, however the implementation is going to take a while.
Like what a few others have said, Youtube has been the most successful at what it's doing and no one has surpassed even half of what youtube already has. And it will only continue to grow. The only thing we can do is hope that another site which shares their purpose with youtube will grow to be its rival. Which I doubt will happen in a very long time, even I use youtube, quite frankly. So it's possible, however the real question is "WHEN".

Globalization is the key to success. We have it, we just don't know what door it unlocks.

I don't know how much storage space youtube needs, but I suspect it is a whole lot..

So, if there were n participants in a decentralized youtube, would not n*m (where m is storage capasity) give the total storage capacity? If so, the storage capacity could become quite large given enough participants.

Isn't popcorn running on top of bittorrent? Could something similar be achieved for youtube?

Freenet is a decentralized peer-to-peer network that sounds similar to what you're after and a YouTube-esque site could be built on Freenet that doesn't store videos but uses torrents instead - like you said.

As you correctly point out, a truly decentralized YouTube would be difficult to implement since videos have vastly greater storage and bandwidth requirements than pictures or text. While still useable for the most part, sites on Freenet are much slower than sites on the normal Internet despite most of them only consisting of simple .html pages.

There have been attempts to develop altcoins that function as decentralized versions of The Pirate Bay but most of these have turned out to be scams.
