I'm not sure what to think about ethereum, but what is likely to happend to bitcoin after its released? Will people switch to ethereum? Will demand for bitcoins drop? Or could they possibly co-exist? I'm really not sure what to think or expect.

Imho Ethereum will not affect Bitcoin at all. I think that it's just another altcoin. It has something behind it, but all the altcoins that want to survive have that. It has big advertising and.. this world became quite skeptical. Let's see what happens with this new coin / platform.
From what I've read it's not even near to a competition to Bitcoin.

Ethereum is too complicated for most people (even Bitcoin is too complicated - we need more services like Coinbase, Circle, etc.) - if you make it easier you have to limit the functionality (you could as well use Bitcoin then).
There's only a limited amount of people who are ever going to use something like that.

Even Vitalik B. recently said somewhere on and/or linked on Reddit that he fears no new protocol could overtake BTC. Someone suggested that they rename it to cocaineum though. You've gotta admit that giving your kids lunch money in cocaineum format would be pretty cool. And my experience w/ trying to get ppl to understand BTC is that it's apparently so complicated it leaves their heads spinning. So no telling what cocaineum could do.

Thanks for the reassurances, I just couldn't understand what all the hype was about, or what it could fundamentally offer me, that Bitcoin hasn't already accomplished in some way.

it offer something like freenet, which a total different thing then bitcoin, i can't see how they can compete to each other, bitcoin should help etherum as a known currency to be used in their decentralized system but etherum in the end it's nothing new really, it's like freenet(like i said above) + bitcoin

I don't know much about ethereum but it sounds like another altcoin and when has any altcoin in the past affected Bitcoin in anyway?
People get excited about new ones all the time but nothing has so far came even close to where Bitcoin is.

It's way behind schedule and probably going to be released without a GUI as command line based. That's going to put people off. I know some cryptonote coins started off without a GUI and did OK when they eventually got one, but they might have done better starting off with one.

Bitcoin and ethereum are equally excellent coins, but it is very difficult to replace bitcoin, because bitcoin still leads the peak of all altcoins in the world.

Because of the success of bitcoin in the past few years, many investors have been attracted by it and other digital currencies. Bitcoin, however, is not the only cryptocurrency that has risen in value. ETH has been on the rise since January 2017. From $8.24, up to the nearest $500. Known as "bitcoin 2.0", the "Ethereum" is used in the block chain technology that is different from bitcoin. Unlike bitcoin, companies are more focused on how to use ETH technology for real-world applications.
Whichever country is the first to use the technology, it has a huge economic advantage.
Regulators around the world think it is the best time to develop a national encryption currency, and that is the future.
