For quite some time now, I've been considering making a thread dedicated to posting and discussing news stories, videos and observations regarding the Police State. I often find stories and videos, involving advancements in technologies and policies, as well as abuse of authority and police brutality, that I'd like to share, yet I don't necessarily feel like they are deserving of a new thread every time. I hope this thread will be useful to everyone in the community who'd like to keep up-to-date on and discuss this topic.

Here's the latest story I ran across, I feel is typical of the kind that doesn't deserve a dedicated thread, but I want to share, nonetheless.

Officer Patrick Cherry, a New York Police Department detective assigned to the Joint Terrorism Task Force, became insanely angry at an Uber driver who honked at the detective for blocking him while parking his unmarked vehicle. A passenger recorded the tirade...

 In the video, you can hear that the officer claims the driver committed three traffic violations. Seth says that isn't true.

“In an unmarked car, the policeman was allegedly attempting to park without using his blinker at a green light,” reads Seth’s YouTube description.

“(His reverse lights weren't on. Likely double parked without hazards on.) The Uber driver pulled around and gestured that he should use his blinker, casually and non-offensively, and kept driving us. The policeman aggressively pulls up behind us and this is what happens.”

A package of police oversight bills introduced in the Colorado Legislature includes a measure that would impose up to $15,000 in civil penalties if a law enforcement officer seizes or destroys a citizen’s recording or interferes with someone trying to film them.

"Primarily, it came up as a result of the number of news reports we’ve been seeing about police officers telling people, ‘Give me your camera,’ or taking the data away, and that is unacceptable conduct," said Rep. Joe Salazar, a Democrat from Thornton and co-sponsor of the bill.

i know this was a critical situation, but they are cops - they have to fucking act rational in exactly such situations!

i know this was a critical situation, but they are cops - they have to fucking act rational in exactly such situations!

In both of these cases the cops' actions were deplorable. There's no justifiable excuse for this behavior. Cops should remain professional at all times, but instead are given a free pass to act despicably. Rest assured, if regular people did what any of these cops did they would have been criminally charged and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The five cops that were immediately fired in the second story were even reinstated afterwards.

State Legislators Pushing Bills To Shield Police Officers From Their Own Body Camera Recordings

More and more police departments are equipping body cameras on their officers in hopes of trimming down the number of complaints and lawsuits filed against them.

Meanwhile, the public has taken police accountability into its own hands, thanks to the steady march of technology -- which has put a portable phone in almost every person's hands, and put a camera inside most of those phones.

So, we have two entities viewing accountability from seemingly opposite directions. Over the years, many officers have made it clear through their actions that being filmed isn't something they're comfortable with. This has resulted in additional misconduct and abuse of existing laws to shut down recordings. But what are these officers going to do when a city council -- or worse, a Memorandum of Understanding with the Justice Department -- directs them to start generating their own recordings?

One answer has already been presented by the Denver Police Department. They simply won't activate the cameras.

Don't bother adjusting for population differences, or poverty, or mental illness, or anything else. The sheer fact that American police kill TWICE as many people per month as police have killed in the modern history of the United Kingdom is sick, preposterous, and alarming.

Indian police to use pepper-spraying drones on unruly protesters

The city's police force has bought five drones, costing about 600,000 rupees ($9,600) each, with their introduction planned for later this month, he said.

The unmanned drones are equipped with high-resolution cameras. They can carry two kilograms (4.4 pounds) of pepper and fly within a one-kilometre radius of their operator.

Lucknow police have previously used drones for aerial surveillance including during religious festivals in the city, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state.

Most of the time police work for the city. This means that the city ordains a police force, and then lets certain "professionals" set it up. Usually these professionals aren't the city council members that voted the police force in. Once it gets going, the city council has little ability to do anything with the police force other than completely disband it. It is difficult for them to discipline cops.

The point? We need to set up a people's police force, one that is totally trained and outfitted as the city police force, one that doesn't do anything except to arrest bad cops, and beat the crap out of them if necessary.

And many others haven't; that apparently not being a sufficient reason for the police not to harm, or sometimes, kill them. And indeed, you didn't say it was right for the police to beat people up, but you're throwing a "the best way to stop cops from beating you up is don't break the law" like it's some sort of inevitability, or, dare I say, an understandable outcome - it isn't; it's dependent on training (or lack thereof) the police receive, and often enough, the culture of impunity they've got going.

True to the usual culture of impunity, the agents responsible were given only very light sentences: letters of reprimand for most, and week long suspensions without pay for a couple of them.
