Hi People,

I think that we should have added to Bitcointalk a new top level topic called "Security"

My reasoning is as follows:

1 ) Security is one of the most pressing concerns for Bitcoin adoption.
2 ) Security is a large complex topic, for example, a subset of "Security" would be security for bitcoin services, security for home wallets, security for long term storage etc...
3 ) Instead of having this topic hidden under "development" or "projects" or something else, I think it's important enough to warrant it's own topic alongside "General"
4 ) I consider security to be one of the fundamental pillars of Bitcoin, it's arguably more important than the next exchange project...
5 ) I would like a central topic where people can post about the times they have been hacked, about the insecure exchanges, etc...
6 ) With a lot of people in one place concerning themselves with the topic of Bitcoin security, a lot of ideas might start to accumulate and more solutions found.
7 ) It would be a good place to direct people, so that "General" doesn't get clogged up with those that get hacked, and that the victims have somewhere to turn.
8 ) I originally had this idea because I was thinking that there should be a sticky in technical or general that asks the following:
-If you have been hacked, please present all the following information:
--What OS are you using?
--Do you have a virus scanner / firewall.
--Post a list of running applications from a task manager or process list.
--etc....

And then I thought, well this sort of in depth analysis of people having their Bitcoins stolen doesn't belong in General or even Technical, it really deserves it's own place in this forum.

Anyway, It might be a bad idea, if you think this idea is bad, let me know!

Vote away people.

(Of course votes don't guarantee anything, as it's up to the admin what they do with their website)

Thanks!

Many people post their experience with stolen / hacked coins just here:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=83.0

I think an extra "Security" sub-board isn't necessary.

Edit: Maybe open a poll?

There should be a poll open, near the top of the post.

I'm not sure about the scam topic/board. There isn't really a lot of people in there trying to develop technologies against hacking and theft in general.
For example, my Dad has to run his Bitcoin wallet on a totally separate computer as this was my advise, I couldn't trust him to run Bitcoin on their main computer.

I don't live with Dad so I'm not always around to give advice.

The trouble is, this isn't really practical for the future of Bitcoin.

Maybe you're right and the scam board is enough. The trouble is not every hacking is a scam.

I think this is a decent idea, and definitely worthy of discussion. I think it would help not having to dig around the boards for this specific issue - especially for the newcomers.

Is there enough topics to add a "Security" board? Also, if this is going to be added, we need a new name as there already a board named "Securities"*.

Marketplace sub-board "Securities" as the name suggest is for topics about individual Bitcoin bonds, stocks, etc. I cannot see a problem however since they will go in separate higher level board; so, IMO, no risks of confusion.

You shouldn't be confused with "Security" and "Securities", as they are different in meaning.

"Security" refers to a state of being free or away from any harm or threat; whereas "Securities" refers to different investment instrument that has value and can be traded.

Security (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/security)
Securities (http://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/security.asp)

I agree on getting a separate board with these type of concerns. As a newbie back then, I have to sift through pages of Development and Technical Discussion before finding the right topic that I'm looking for. It is very time-consuming if you're a newbie--especially if you aren't used to the forum's design and whatnot. A separate child-board is ideal IMO, as it will greatly lessen the time of finding a security-related topic for newbies and for the older users as well.

I think it's not good idea. You're right, many questions from different topics and sections related to security. But right now they are in their corresponding places and you propose to mix them in one place.  Smiley

It was already cleared by Grand_Voyageur. Anyway, thank you both!

Security is also being used for stock and bonds but "securities" are often used. This doesn't mean only plural must be used. Correct me if I am wrong.

Yes, both are used. It's pretty obvious what he meant if one were to read the OP.

Indeed!

I'm hoping that a topic such as security with its own subcategories will hopefully create its own little community of security professionals.

It's a place everyone can turn to for help regarding security.

-Cryptographers that want to help develop security for Bitcoin and the various Bitcoin platforms.
-Experienced users giving advice to Bitcoin newbies all in one place.
-A subcategory for people that have been hacked, so we can help analyse what went wrong and in turn help us build a better framework for Bitcoin security.

they need to rename the "Securities" sub "Palookaville" and move it to the trash, really. call your board "Security Discussion" then list all the various subs.

+111 I'm of absolutely the same mind. I have no idea how much work goes into re arranging things on this forum software, but im guessing you just create "new" on the template.

There will be a cavalcade of dissent over the subjects to be given subs. I mean, there is service discussion, project development, hardware(?)

I really like the idea. wouldn't know where to start.
