It's quite ridiculous how easy it is for users to inflate the price of their own auctions. Kind of defeats the purpose of the board. What do you think?

Are you saying about bumping the price with alts? If a person bump with a known-alt, it is likely that it will be pointed but if they post with an alt but nobody knows he is the owner, I don't think it can be prevented. People also tell their acquaintances to bump the price.

I think it's normal, because alt account or multiple account aren't against the forum rules so if someone want to bid in his own action to increase the price, he is free to do it (but if he will catch by a default trust member I'm sure he will receive a negative trust) and that's all.

And what do you suggest to stop this? Anyone could do this behavior on any type of auctions - ebay etc but there's nothing that can really be done about it nor is it the staff's problem to police.

Well, ebay is a very different case so I don't think that I should comment on that one.

As of my suggestion, newbies (and maybe Jr. Members too) could only post new topics on the board, and not reply with bids. This way users wouldn't create new accounts just to boost their auction.

Furthermore, some IP restrictions could also work. I know that this is easily bypassed but it's easily implemented and surely better than nothing.

Then it will be a sort of discrimination to "honest" jr. member and newbie users, as I have read in the past there is nothing that the staff of bitcointalk can do for resolve at all this problem. For the question of IP there are a lot of proxy, vpn and also TOR so in my honest opinion a sort of IP restriction will not resolve the problem.

there is a little difference from bitcointalk and ebay...
if you control 2 accounts on ebay: Ausr who is selling and Busr who is buying...
and B wins the auction.. Ausr need to pay fees, and did not sell the item!!!

so you need to pay attention to do it, if you do not want to lose money

Not really. Just cancel the auction and send a second chance offer. You could also end up winning the auction here too.

You cancel the auction after it's finished not the bids.

It isn't very hard to not to pay here if you win the auction. You can tell that the account won the auctiom isn't responding or something and to make the preveeding bidder a winner. But if this pattern is repeated in two or more auctions, your plan will likely be ruined when there are brainiacs around here.

Could ask them to post the payment transaction and look at the taint, but its marginally useful at best. I don't think there's a good way to stop this behaviour as long as smurfs are allowed.

I don't think alts will pay the amount. They obviously want to raise the price not to be winner.

See the post above yours.

If someone of "his" hipotetical alt will win the auction he can send the money (to himself) and try again to resell that thing another time (with another alt account). So it is possible to simulate a win, and it will not exist a real solution of this problem.
