Feds attempting to control the market, dry up supply? Purchase in addition to billions of bullets previously bought by feds

The Department of Homeland Security is set to purchase over 62 million rounds of ammo typically used in AR-15 semi-automatic rifles, just weeks after the ATF was forced to back down on a ban on M855 bullets.

A posting on FedBizOpps.gov this week reveals that the DHS is looking to contract with a company to provide 12.6 million rounds of .223 Remington ammunition per year for a period of five years – totaling 62.5 million bullets.

The solicitation explains that the purchase is intended, “to achieve price savings over the current .223 Rem duty ammunition.” The bullets will be used by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents nationwide for “training” purposes.

The .223 Remington is one of the most common rifle cartridges in use in the United States and is used both in bolt action rifles and semi-automatic rifles such as the AR-15 and the Ruger Mini-14.

This was pretty amazing for people to watch.   It sounded like these would get banned, I thought it was going to since these specific bullets are able to go through a good amount of steel.

Just the rumor of  this sold pretty much every stockpile of this ammo.   Companies making this ammo had one heck of a good time on sales.

Why?  So they can shoot any of their fellow Customs and Border Patrol agents who actually try to arrest someone sneaking in?

Seriously, we could run a high quality training program - easily - with 2000 rounds per shooter.  That'd be 200 a day for two weeks and it would wear them out.  Compare this with a lot of police depts. where the requirement is the officer shoots a box (50) per year in training.

So that's 500 agents per million rounds, 12.6 million rounds would do 6000+ agents....somewhat plausible.  Of course likely they are not running a program recertifying or initially training these guys with 2000 rounds per man.

But the numbers are not orders of magnitude off.

This article is partial wrong.  They would be buying 5.56 nato rounds.   .223 is not 5.56 nato.  Yes close but no not the same.

A gun stamped 5.56 can shoot both the 5.56 and .223(Example is a AR-15).   A gun stamped .223 you should never put a 5.56 nato in.

Out of curiosity.   How many target shooters in the US have started ordering online?

I have been surprised of money saved, and how easy it is compared to brick/mortar stores on getting certain calibers.
