I'm new to all this, so I don't want to make a mistake.

I currently run version 1.9.8 under OS X 10.6.8. I have other Macs here running 10.9.5 which do not have Electrum installed.

I have, of course, my 12-word seed generator.

I want to upgrade to the latest version of Electrum, with subsequent use of a Trezor.

Can someone list for me, in clear steps, the way to a problem-free upgrade? Or, is the upgrading trivial, and I'm worried over nothing. Many thanks.

Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.

Thank you for your kind response.

Will the installation of the 2.04 client on the 10.9.5 mac affect the functioning of the 1.9.8 wallet, if I just leave the 1.9.8 wallet on the 10.6.8 system as is? I wouldn't expect so, but just to be sure.

Finally, once the installation on the 10.9.5 system is completed and confirmed, is there any point of keeping the 1.9.8 wallet?

Electrum 2.0.x is fully capable of using 1.9.8 wallet files. As a precaution you can backup your wallet file before the upgrade. But once you've installed 2.0.x you don't have to restore your wallet from seed. Just run electrum and it'll open your old wallet file.

That's perfectly fine, even if you use the same wallets (created from the same seeds) on both systems.

nerioseole alluded to one above—Electrum 2.x uses a different wallet format. If you give it a 1.9.8 wallet file, it will upgrade it to the new format behind the scenes (the seed remains the same). If you ever want to copy this 2.x wallet file to a machine that has Electrum 1.x on it, you'll need to instead either:
  • Use a backup from Electrum 1.x, or
  • simply restore from the seed.
