Xapo should not be on that list....they are doing very well.  The person who included it misinterpreted the article they cited.  The article referenced a $40M GAIN, not a $40M LOSS!  Here is the article in question: http://www.coindesk.com/xapo-sets-40-million-fundraising-record-bitcoin-industry/
Xapo got $40M, spent it building a 'vault' that nobody wants or uses.  They did this after they failed on a debit card due to their dumb ass partner in Gibraltar who failed to tell them until the very last day that it wouldn't work for US customers.

Now that $40M is gone - the vault is totally stupid - the debit card is defunct - and the death certificate of Xapo is being written.

$40M loss - Xapo is dead.

Well, for those of you who believed Game Fault Studios was an innovative platform, I guess we can add them to the list also....http://www.stacksofcoin.com/game-vault-studios-innovators-or-idiots/

They jumped ship, apparently when google dropped their adsense contract: Oops!

EDIT:

And, I still maintain that Xapo.com should not be on that list!

$40M loss - Xapo is dead.

It's the baby of someone very connected with very deep pockets. It's still running. It may well die some day but it's a long way from qualifying yet no matter how you feel about it.

I wouldn't be surprised to se even Genesys on this list one day when all hell breaks loose on their books. With exchanges it is evitable too happen with so much money changing hands Undecided

Jesus, 229! I bet I couldn't name 229 legitimate Bitcoin businesses. With a history like bitcoin has it's a wonder anyone uses it at all.

Everyone says that fiat has a lot of theft and crime too, bla bla bla. Duh, of course it does. It's been used by everyone in the world for hundreds of years. Bitcoin is six years old and has a little over a million users and it rivals any major theft in fiats history.

Why are you saying that Xapo us dead? I'm using it and I also have their debit card which is functioning normal without issues (for Europe and other customers) and I can't complain.
They maybe had some problems and bad decissions but their service is stil ongoing and the company is existing.

Having shown the Bitcoin companies that are dead or showing a loss in their balance sheet. What then are the companies that are making money? I can only think of some of the darknet market places are making money, some high traffic gambling sites like NitrogenSports and maybe a few of the more dominant exchanges. I would think that even a Bitcoin company that is highly funded like 21 Inc. has no revenue and profit as of now.

There are no bitcoin companies making money.  Some are being run at break even - barely.  and only because they can fire almost everyone and get down their burn rate.  The network is stalled.  There is no real traffic.  No merchant traffic.  No end user traffic.  Bitcoin has moved to become a settlement only network just like Blockstream intended.

This is true of any emerging technology. In the initial stages, they are cash guzzlers.
Once they scale up and have enough customers, they begin throwing out money. So Bitcoin companies are no different.

So Bitcoin companies are no different.
Except that they are all broke with over $1B of VC money spilt to date.

The length of that list is staggering but I have always though of bitcoin as modern era gold rush a few will make fortunes, some will make some money and a lot are going to lose everything they have.

i dont know why    Silk Road is mentioned here as it is an illegal market and FBI confiscated the said 127.4 million dollars and not hacked ,so you included illegal markets too for this list and i think the rest of the them are cloud mining which is infact scam ones and hacked exchanges.

Many of these sites don't correlate to "bitcoin being dead" as some were shut down and others were merely scams.

The most important recent sign the naysayers will point to is the announced closure of faucetbox.

Most newbies including myself took their very first satoshi from faucets and faucetbox is one of the biggest microwallets.

My feel is that rising fee costs (they absorb all fees) have really hit them as they transact dust to users. Their demise is one less avenue for newbies to get acquainted with crypto.

I can add Rugatu, a question and answer service that included Bitcoin payments. It was a very interesting site, going down due to death of its founder "paraipan", who was also active ins this forum (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=29395). See here: https://www.reddit.com/r/rugatu/comments/2ikcz3/regarding_rugatu_rip_paraipan/

Did the thread starter consider including the time of foundation and (more interestingly) the time when a service/company went offline? That would be really interesting, because the list could be sorted and a timeline of bitcoin history could be created. Of course it's a lot of work, but it might be worthwhile.

Over $1Billion lost so far.  Probably going to be a lot more in the near future.  Smiley

Bitcoin is still a start up currency and bitcoin companies are basically flying blind for the most part so I don't see this as much of a surprise tbh. Do you know the percentage of new businesses that fail in the first few months / year? It's huge. Now through in the fact that the currency your business is built on fluctuates constantly from huge swings (in terms of a currency's normal fluctuation) and it's a tough business. No doubt in my mind a lot of these failures could have been avoided if there was more knowledge/experience out there.
