So there it is the beginning of Bitcoin  .  The original 50 coins are still there plus some nice people that wanted to donate to it.

btc value is 65.44243457 btc

But there it is.  I would buy it from Satoshi  for 100 btc.

I sure he wants more. I am also sure many people would give him quite a bit more then 500 btc for it to belong to them.

So simple question what would you pay for it?

I'll only charge satoshi $7.99 + GST/PST/VAT/whatever other taxes applicable + shipping and handling to take it off his hands.

I'd pay a $30 premium Grin

The keys belong to satoshi, and should stay like that.

Well, I can pay 150 BTC for the keys and btt account. w/o forum account , its meaningless.
However , when you get both , ROI is achievable in 1 or 2 weeks Grin

I thought the bitcoin from the genesis block could not be spent due to "a quirk in how bitcoin is designed"

I may have totally made that quote up but that's what my brain is telling me Wink

I'd pay quite a large amount for them Smiley. Though I heard that there was a glitch in the code so they are not spendable.

To be clear:
  • The 50 BTC coinbase output is not spendable.
  • The 15.44243457 BTC which have since been sent to the corresponding address are spendable.

Certainly true, but paying 100 BTC for 15 (spendable) BTC only makes sense if your interest in the private key is beyond profit.

The stupidest question ever in the world, sorry in advance guys.

But what does the genesis block have to do with coinbase (the company?)?

i would only pay for the spendable coins plus something extra as people from time to time will donate a few bits to that address. other than that there is no real benefit in having that address.

Coinbase is not only the name of a company, but also the name of the transaction that "transfers" newly generated coins into. Its the transaction in a block without input, e.g. this[1]. The genesis block is special as the 50 BTC of its coinbase transaction are not spendable.

I think you guys are missing the problem with 'buying' keys. You can't actually know if the person you bought them from has retained the key - so you don't actually know if your the sole owner. That being said, I personally wouldn't buy it (except for a profit) - nothing really special I can do with it aside from a signing messages I guess.
