This is a no brainer... This is what the s4 should have been...

To release this now with old chips, Shame on u bitmain.. Seems like u have excess stock in your warehouse of maybe C1's and ur trying to get rid of the chips in bulk..

To high a price with S5's in circulation, To high Wattage, To much noise.

I was looking forward to an S4+ using the newer S5 chip at least at 1500w at least that would have pushed it over the 3th mark..

Bad rushed decisions... Come on bitmain, U were the best at this & now your slowly starting to run downhill at a very quick pace & u still havent fixed the voltage settings on the S4

Heres a tip for the S4 in the Freq table take out all the over clock settings & lock them down but leave the underclock settings..

Then in the voltage settings put a drop down box with the underclock voltage settings with suggested freq settings so that people cant blow these things up.. But can downclock them.

Then also put a box allowing the  --bitmain-homemode or normal mode so that can be run a little quieter.

END OF LINE

Sometimes for the miner, the best strategy is to run the miners that already in hands and not to buy any new miners. Only buy the miners that is best for you. For a home miner the electricity cost is high and noise is a pain, so we should buy the high efficiency mining rigs. But for large scale miners, the cost of electricity maybe low and noise level is not a concern, they may have better tolerence with the old chips and not so sexy power efficiency.

Was the above meant for me?? The S4+ is no good for no one…

Why use old chips when new one are available that are faster & more efficient??

Leftover old stock by the sounds & if this is the case they should have sold all of them before releasing new ones.. This is bad business practice that smacks of greed!

So I just convinced my Wife  to sell our home in NJ and move out to the state of WASHINGTON.
We are both retired have pensions. I found a 15 acre place with a barn that had a large 200amp 240 watt service in it since the prior owner had a welding business.

 Power is 4 cents.  200 amp 240 means 48kwatts x 80% = 38 kwatts,

I can fit 25 of these . they would be far easier to  manage then s-5's
the bold is how they could work for me if the example was true.

So basically these are for low power cost farms and data centers.  Not no one. As you think.

But I agree with one thing they are forcing a guy like me out of the game Since I do not have the ability to keep the noise controlled.

Nice one Phil ! Can I rent a room now ?

Just kidding ;-)

I would not mind moving to washington since my wife and I do have pensions and are retired.  But all of our families are east coast so we will stay on the atlantic vs the pacific .

Wow cogratz on such a big move.  That will be huge on your mining profits.    I look foward to see what you have in store!

LOL... that must have been an interesting conversation.

Phil - Honey, I think we've been in NJ long enough.  Let's sell our house.
Wife - Where did you have in mind?
Phil - Well, I was thinking about Washington.
Wife - Oh, Seattle is a beautiful city...
Phil - Ummm... no, I was thinking more like eastern Washington.
Wife - Huh?  There's nothing there!
Phil - Sure there is!  Spokane is the second largest city.  There's the Columbia river, the Grand Coulee Dam... we'll save a ton on power costs!
Wife - Alright, but the weather is nasty.  Hot summers, freezing winters...
Phil - Yeah!  Those freezing cold winters will be GREAT!
Wife - You hate the cold... what are you getting at?
Phil - Well, I found a nice place on 15 acres with a barn...
Wife - A barn??!!??  Why would we ever need a barn?  We don't own horses...
Phil - The barn used to house a welding shop...
Wife - So?
Phil - So, it's got a nice 200 amp service with 240V power...
Wife - And?  You're going to start welding stuff?
Phil - Well, no... not exactly.  I was thinking it would be a great place to put more of those Bitcoin miners.
Wife - Bitcoin miners.
Phil - Yeah, you know...
Wife - You want to move us across the country... and your reason is so you can have even MORE of those damn noisy miners?
Phil - Ummm.... yes?

Please note, the above is a completely fictional account of the conversation between Phil and his wife.  I was bored and thought maybe it might elicit a few chuckles.

In all seriousness, congrats, Phil!  I hope you and the wife enjoy your new adventures Smiley.

PS - can you host a couple miners for me? Tongue

Jonny's Pool - Mine with us and help us grow!  Support a pool that supports Bitcoin, not a hardware manufacturer's pockets!  No SPV cheats.  No empty blocks.

5. The product is new from the factory, but due to testing periods and the unstable air quality around the factory, there may be dust on the machine when you receive it.

Quoted for future laughs.

Most of the huge farms are in and around Moses Lake area, more central Wash. if you go by a map.  But Washingtonians call anything east of the Cascades eastern Wash..  Spokane's energy costs I'm not sure of but is about 2 hours away from Moses Lake.  Off topic I'm sorry.

When I first saw this, I was thinking dmwardjr, and not Phil. Personally, my wife would just wave as she sent me on my way, alone, to Washington. Yes, I make adjustments for mining. Moving from Minnesota will NOT be one of them.

color me confused. One message says that Phil is going to washington to a 15acre estate.
the very next message says that he stays on atlantic.
I guess it is still under discussion.

Anyway, I also want to move to WA or OR myself, but it has nothing to do with mining, nothing at all  Grin
However, most likely, I won't because it is difficult to convince the "nest builder" to build a brand new nest somewhere else when the current one "just started to look good".

Whoa!!!

Just about time that a manufacture released a new product.

This miner is going to be BIG!

Since this uses the same chips as the S3. Can the S3 be downclocked to run at a similar efficiency? 0.58J/GH ?

Also I think this should be put in bold

1. The included PSU cannot be used in countries with a mains power voltage lower than 205V. The PSU will not start below this voltage.

Pretty much has no market in North America then.
Exactly, pretty huge shot in the foot.

Would a step-up transformer work to power one of these units from a standard 120V connection?

Something like this:
http://www.quick220.com/220_catalog/voltage-converters.html

While the device you show, might be able to produce 240V, there are some serious, un-mentioned caveats:

- You almost certainly need to have the two 120V outlets on different circuits. That doesn't just mean two different outlets on the wall, but different circuits. You would have to figure that out for your house.

- There will be an ongoing efficiency cost, on trying to do this. In order to get 2000 Watts out on the 240V outlet, you will almost certainly need 1050 Watts for each of the 120V lines (total 2100W or more).

- There is also no mention of how well suited this kind of a device is for 24 hours per day operation. I'd be surprised if it didn't generate some heat itself, and run the risk of failure.

So while might be theoretically possible, I doubt if it would be practical, or cost efficient to do so.

Depending on your personal family situation, would you save lots of money on electricity, only to hand it over to an airline for trips "back home" to visit family? Unlike some folks, I am unwilling to chase Bitcoin across the country. Just my personal choice though.

That conversion box may be okay to run 1 s4+ 24/7    it could be 95% efficient and if you read it closely it has de rate numbers for runs longer then 3 hours.  the weakest one  reads

The unit supplies anywhere from 216 to 250 Volts of AC power through two NEMA 6-15R outlets at 15 Amps for up to 3 hours or 12 Amps for longer periods, thought it has a momentary over range capacity for starting motors and similarly demanding devices.

the new s4+ needs 1600-1800 watts that is 7 x 240 = 1680  so at most 8 or 9 amps constant . but the cost is more then it is to hook up a 240 volt line.

Now if you are in an apartment and the noise means nothing and the power is free. yeah it may be good.  remember it reads  the 2 different sockets must be out of phase to work.

The A220-15D voltage converter uses two 72-inch power cords with straight-blade, US/Canadian standard, NEMA 5-15 plugs plugged into two out-of-phase, standard 110/120 Volt outlets for power input.
..
you may not have access to that in your apartment.

When i said these are no good for no one... I was meaning no good for people who currently own S4's..

Anyone who missed getting an S4 these are good & easy to manage but S5's would be better & cheaper to run.
