having a problem with my r9 280x.

ok, so I grabbed an msi Radeon r9 280x 3gb edition from a friend to try out for scrypt coin mining.  but I cant seem to get cgminer working properly.  It loads for about 1 minute, then the entire computer just shuts down.  the power supply is a 600 watt psu and this is the only video card connected to this pc.  but literally, I open the bat file, and it says started cgminer 3.7.2 for about 1 minute, then the screen goes black and the pc shuts down.  I have the APP sdk installed, but i cant figure out what is wrong.  help is greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a heat or power problem. Did you connect both power adapters to the card?

yes both connectors are attached.  Afterburner doesn't show an increase in heat or throttling up to maximum clock, it stays normal all the way up to the point of shutdown.  I had a 5670 in this computer just a little while prior to installing this card.  I'm using the latest driver, which of this writing is 14.2.

Have you tested the card with a game or benchmark tool? Otherwise i would try to start to cgminer without any options regarding the graphic card. Maybe in your bat file are options enabled where lead to crash the card.

I will try 3Dmark and let you know of the results.  Also, the power supply only has 1 6 pin pcie connector, but the friend I got the card from gave me a 8 pin adapter which tees off into two molex adapters.  I have both of them connected, as well as the 6 pin PCIE connector, should I only have one of them connected?

No, you must connect both to the power supply.

ok, i used 3dmark and it didnt even get past the first graphics test without shutting down.  I will take the card and test it on my pc at home which has a more powerful psu (1200 watts) and the standard 8 and 6 pin pcie connectors.  It's also got the 2013 tomb raider game installed on it so that should provide a decent enough benchmark at home.  Hopefully my friend didn't give me a lemon lol.

If it shut down without any graphical glitches then it is the power supply. Your power supply at home should handle the card properly.

Your problem is your PSU. It's no name garbage that has 600w written on it, but it can only put out 250w on a good day. Keep forcing it to power down and you'll soon have a sparky dead PSU, which could very well take out the rest of your hardware.

My advice? Give the 280x back to your friend, or use it to game once you get a real PSU.

Yeah, the PSU I had originally tried it on was a Safe Power brand I dont remember the model # or name though.  The problem was the PSU.  I installed it on a 1200 watt corsair PSU on the pc at home and it's running beautifully now! I'm currently hashing away at 650~700khash/s with my temps reading about 60-70 or so.  I've a lot of fans in my case and the case itself is pretty big so that definitely helps.  The old PSU wasn't giving enough power on it's rails, so while it could run the card under normal desktop conditions, as soon as the card was put under load the psu auto protection circuit tripped, and thus the shutdown.  I must say the 280x is quite a nice card.  it seems to be a much more solid performer than my old GTX 760 ACXII.

yeah i think so because i tried a nvidia geforce gtx 760 in it as well and it failed to power up as well, and that card had the latest graphics driver as well.  Next time, I'll pay more attention to the brand name LOL.
