I received a tiny BTC deposit in my wallet recently. I don't know where it came from and I hadn't sent or received to or from my wallet in about 2 weeks before the deposit. Could this be something to be concerned about?

Nah... you should be happy. However if you want, can you post the transaction ID? Thanks. However, again ... don't worry (free money ).

It is the Bitcoin equivalent of "spam" so no real need to worry about it (if you are concerned about it being used to *track* some future tx you make then you might want to do some research about "coin control").

Whatever you do, don't open it! It will give the keys to all your wallets and then the sender will get all your coins. Please be careful! It is a scam.

Free money is no concern. Others have had this happen and reported that it turned out to be a marketing campaign. I think it was a gambling operation that sent out tiny amounts. If I remember correctly there was also a message broadcast with the transaction. But it does not lead to taking your bitcoins, anyone can send you some.

Should be advertising spam or anything like that. See the transaction in blockchain if there are some comments regarding that tx. Services often do that even in the past, and I can't see why they're doing such a thing. It's kinda ineffective and clogs the network and the receivers' wallet.

Bitcoin wallets should have a protected code like Perfect Money has wherein a person can chose to receive the money or not. Receiving such unwanted bits is just a waste. Two more users reported this and received 0.0001 BTC from an HYIP/Ponzi website.

No, no... this will broke the 'decentralized system'. Everyone can send money withouth any type of restrinction (this is why a lot of people 'love' BTC). If 'you' start to put restrinction, I think a lot of folk will abandon bitcoin.

I have received nominal amounts of bitcoin before, but then it disappears again a while later.. I was a bit worried about it when it first happened, then concerned about how someone can send money and it not actually be in my account, I still don't get it, but it seems to be a bitcoin quirk..

I was a bit worried about it when it first happened, then concerned about how someone can send money and it not actually be in my account, I still don't get it, but it seems to be a bitcoin quirk.. That was probably an unconfirmed transaction. Most likely the sender didn't include a transaction fee, so the transaction never got mined and never made it into a block. I received a tiny BTC deposit in my wallet recently. I don't know where it came from and I hadn't sent or received to or from my wallet in about 2 weeks before the deposit. How would the deposit be used to track my future transactions? Can't my transactions be tracked just the same with or without the deposit? What they can do is they can send a small amount to one of your old, empty addresses. One day your client will likely spend these coins in a transaction that involves other addresses you own, revealing some of your other bitcoin addresses. To avoid this you can use the "coin control" feature available in most wallets to prevent the tracked address being used in the same transaction as your other addresses.

I'm afraid you've been hacked. Those coins are a virus and you've now been infected. Next time you log in your balance will be sent to the ghost of satoshi. Seriously, you're a hero member and you're worried about someone sending you bitcoins? It's most liklely nothing but blockchain spam.

It's tracking that I'm concerned about. But the address the coins were sent to isn't empty to I guess it's just spam.

Then it is definitely a spam bot that is sending it to you. Accept your free prize with grace!

OP said he received a small amount of BTC not a file. I have only gotten this a few times but some companies send out very very tiny amounts with an ad attached. So if you look at blockchain it shows companies ad above the actual transation. No it is nothing to worry about.

check that transaction on blockchain.info and see is there any comment of message ot that transaction? if there is, it must be spam advertisement over blockchain network, somebody try to make advertisement to your address. I got it many times, usually if you use your address on faucet or altcoin related. Chance to get spam advertisement like that is very high. And worst thing from that spam is size of bitcoin transaction when we send bitcoin become higher and we need more tx fee if there are a lot small transaction that we received

This will help you to save BTC but only if the transaction is confirmed which has very low chance.
