Also note that it was not the NSA that warned people about md5, it was the Iranians who discovered malware containing an md5 exploit. If not for the Iranian discovery and Snowden's revelations we would still be trusting a lot of broken crypto that the NSA hyped as 'secure' http://arstechnica.com/security/2012/10/sha1-crypto-algorithm-could-fall-by-2018/
