Im completely new at this and everything I read about mt. gox everyone acts like you sign up and youre ready to go...but aparently you still have to verify with a i.d....so can i do anything without verifying?

Yes, for smaller amounts (<$1000+-), unverified is perfectly okay to conduct trades.

you can trade and transfer bitcoins out but if you decide to transfer $$ then probably you could be blocked ...
