Maybe he should have taken traveler’s checks.

But it’s too late for that now. All the money – $16,000 in cash – that Joseph Rivers said he had saved and relatives had given him to launch his dream in Hollywood is gone, seized during his trip out West not by thieves but by Drug Enforcement Administration agents during a stop at the Amtrak train station in Albuquerque.

When you think you've seen it all, something "new" comes up...

Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.

Fixed.  His attorney describes the situation more accurately than the author:

“What this is, is having your money stolen by a federal agent acting under the color of law,” said Michael Pancer, a San Diego attorney who represents Rivers, an aspiring music video producer. “It’s a national epidemic. If my office got four to five cases just recently, and I’m just one attorney, you know this is happening thousands of times.”

Fortunately, this will soon be a thing of the past for Bitcoin users as wallet technology improves.

"It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning."   - Henry Ford

This is standard practice on the freeways: Search for Black Asphalt Network  and you'll find articles like
http://www.washingtonpost.com/sf/investigative/2014/09/07/police-intelligence-targets-cash/

Now add this:
http://thefreethoughtproject.com/feds-banks-inform-law-enforcement-customers-depositingwithdrawing-5000-cash/

and connect the dots....

I see the value of Bitcoin, so I don't worry about the price...

That's where the original term of 'highway men' came into being. In these days it's wise to fly like a butterfly and carry something other than cash/fiat, likely bitcoin. Even if you hold money on an exchange across the world, you can send it anywhere once you've reached your destination.

Technically he should take them to court. They have to give it back if he can prove he earned it in a legal way.

When you are suspected for murder, you have to prove that you didn't commit it? You are innocent until proven guilty.
