Can you get like kindle format and whatever else is popular? How does that work?

I can't think of it this second, but there are downloads for bitcoins sites and I think they have pdf/ebook stuff, might want to investigate them.

Converting to different formats is easy, if the book is in digital format already.

I did some of that for my "book club" thread, to make PDFs and such into ePubs.

just offer a lot of books
offer them for better price then others, i think 10-20% less is needed to have a lot of customers
make simple webpage

with these features, there should be a lot of customers... there are a lot of books, which i cant download for free, but dont want to buy it at amazon or elsewhere..

Solid idea. I think computer/programming/mining themed e-books would sell pretty well. As would journal articles. I remember hearing of a journal article detailing how to treat bitcoins for tax purposes, which a few people around here purchased.

Scifi and libertarian fiction would probably get some pretty good numbers, too.

Maybe you can bloat your offering and draw interest/get people used to the site by finding a nice selection of freely available books and organizing it well, summaries, tags etc.

From the Project Gutenberg license:
Quote
1.E.8.  You may charge a reasonable fee for copies of or providing
access to or distributing Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works provided
that

- You pay a royalty fee of 20% of the gross profits you derive from
the use of Project Gutenberg-tm works calculated using the method
you already use to calculate your applicable taxes.  The fee is
owed to the owner of the Project Gutenberg-tm trademark, but he
has agreed to donate royalties under this paragraph to the
Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation.  Royalty payments
must be paid within 60 days following each date on which you
prepare (or are legally required to prepare) your periodic tax
returns.  Royalty payments should be clearly marked as such and
sent to the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation at the
address specified in Section 4, "Information about donations to
the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation."

- You provide a full refund of any money paid by a user who notifies
you in writing (or by e-mail) within 30 days of receipt that s/he
does not agree to the terms of the full Project Gutenberg-tm
License.  You must require such a user to return or
destroy all copies of the works possessed in a physical medium
and discontinue all use of and all access to other copies of
     Project Gutenberg-tm works.

- You provide, in accordance with paragraph 1.F.3, a full refund of any
money paid for a work or a replacement copy, if a defect in the
electronic work is discovered and reported to you within 90 days
     of receipt of the work.

- You comply with all other terms of this agreement for free
     distribution of Project Gutenberg-tm works.

1.E.9.  If you wish to charge a fee or distribute a Project Gutenberg-tm
electronic work or group of works on different terms than are set
forth in this agreement, you must obtain permission in writing from
both the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation and Michael
Hart, the owner of the Project Gutenberg-tm trademark.  Contact the
Foundation as set forth in Section 3 below.

I'd be willing to fill out the metadata, cover art, and such for ePub versions of the books.

You should do some surveys on these forums to see what kind of books people have bought in the past 6 months.

Would you just collect old books from other people, or would you be publishing fresh books? It is kind of a chicken/egg thing, you won't be able to attract good authors until you have a large readership, and you won't be able to attract a large readership until you have some good authors to offer. Publishing is all about marketing, and it is hard work to get started.

Publishing is all about marketing, and it is hard work to get started.

The basic idea is to offer a direct channel from the authors to the readers, but true, in the start there has to be either some free books to offer or some good Author helping at the beginning. I also count on some extra publicity from Bitcoin hype ;-). If only bitcoins were existent when Stephen King started to wrote his "The Plant"..

I think there is space for this kind of service; everyone could publish an ebook with very small amount of money, and possibly get very rich and famous ;-). At the same time, readers could buy ebooks a lot cheaper than nowdays. Ebooks are currently really overpriced by some big operators. Of course, easyness to publish will cause also problems; low quality books etc. Just need to do something to minimise the harm. Quality will vary a lot, there just has to be way for the buyers to find good ones. Some reviewing, ranking etc. Also good classifying system is needed.

Nowdays Facebook (and other SOME) might help to grow even without much material in the start. Most of the authors would, of course, market her/his book (and this website) on facebook..

I'm planning to make a share to the GLBSE in the near future and reveal more of the idea then. If it gets enought interest, I'll start the project. We'll see..

My suggestion: Sell your ebooks without DRM.

Concerned that blockchain bloat will lead to centralization? Storing less than 4 GB of data once required the budget of a superpower and a warehouse full of punched cards. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/87/IBM_card_storage.NARA.jpg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punched_card

I suggest you research the difference between a publishing company and a file sharing site. Wink

Yes, there will definitely be no DRM. I believe the readsers are willing to buy for good books. An the price will be low enought to not be a stoppageg. Since the costs for producing the book are very minimal, the reward for the author can be close to what one would get from real books (which costs 10 times more)

However, CoinDL is too close to my idea.. you *can* publish an ebook in CoinDL. And actually I had in mind that the idea could be extended to any digital media, ie music, videos etc.

are these ebooks / music legally distributed at coindl.com? I mean will this violate any copyright laws? How is this different from downloading ebooks / musics, etc from say, torrent?

I just want to chime in here. All the content at CoinDL is provided by the owners of said content.

We take steps to verify that the submitter of content is associated with the original publisher via email, DNS record changes, or small website modifications. While it might be possible for someone to slip through, we do our best and delay payments for 48-72 hours so that scammers have less chance of gain from an explosive sales event.
