Hello, I need help. Can anyone tell me if there is some restrictions while creating wallet password (Caps Lock, some characters etc.) I lost my pass, but I'm quite sure that I remember words. Just need to know if I could use upper letters, ! as a character, and space. If somebody can help we with that, I would be grateful. Thanks

as far as i know you can use everything for your passphrase, i think you just don't remember some characters
i don't remember now but there is no limit(the imput can be wrong indefinitely), so you can try if those characters work or not

Try different combinations, and did you enter some characters? It is abnormal that it says wrong password, but you say your password is correct. You should recall: any typos when you enter the password? And any blank characters? Hmm, do you use the general passwords you use in websites? If you still can't find the correct one, I am sorry for your loss. Next time don't forget it, just use the general passwords you use, it's hard to steal your local wallet than online wallet.

yeah .. at this point , if you remember the characters of your password ( or a part of them.. ) , bruteforcing could be the solution..

I reset a client few days ago, and my old wallet.dat is overwritten with new wallet.dat. Could this create a problem? Just asking, Im not competent to understand how does it works. As regards brute forcing, I dont think I can do that by myself, and yet, as I have only 0.50BTC there, I dont think that I would be able to pay much for that service as well.

ouch ! anyway , if you've overwritten your initial wallet.dat , it's not a good point.. do you have keep a backup of the initial wallet.dat file before doing that? you need this file to recover your bitcoins....

I dont understand why an older wallet.dat would help you in the first place. Did you recently change the password? Anyway, since it can not be restored it does not matter anyway. You do not remember your password, there is no quick solution for this. You can only brute force the password or pay someone to do this for you. Brute forcing the password will only work if you remember a lot about it. E.g. as you describe in the OP if you are not sure whether you hit 2 or 3, f or G etc. If you do not know enough about the problem and its reasonably strong there is no way to restore it.

Thanks for responds, Im just wondering what might cause this. I've tried to type all passwords I ever used, and it just does not works. Also, I found similar cases, where people were 100% sure about their passwds, and they got same error "The passphrase entered for the wallet decryption was incorrect".

Its possible that the wallet.dat file was corrupted, but IMHO it is more likely that you made a typo while writing the password or you remember it slightly different. Its certainly possible to make the same typo twice in succession and it also happens that your memory fails you. I dont know much about the nature of your password and I understand if you dont want to share anything about it, but e.g. if it is constructed in a certain way its possible to confuse a certain order or something similar. If its randomly generated its harder to remember, etc.

Maybe it's a silly question, but did you try with caps lock on/off, or with num. lock on/off? If you use to use various "national" keyboard types, also trying to switch between them could help (afaik EN/DE/FR have some differences).
Usually a new wallet software should not overwrite your wallet and I hope it's not the case (there's a good chance to lose everything, next time make sure you backup first). Usually new wallet software should make non-encrypted wallet, so, again, it may not be overwritten...
Good luck!

The password is not part of the file in the sense that you can just open the file and look for the password. It is used to encrypt your wallet.dat. It is not stored on any server, unless you saved it there (which you should not).

Make sure you make note of the password, even if it's by using some techniques to remember it. I've made the mistake of creating a wallet whilst not having full concentration before, it's not fun. Although, I knew most of it and made a small error, so I bruteforced it and got it eventually. If you know the majority of the password then this could be a solution for yourself.
Don't beat yourself up though, I've had hundreds of people come to me because they have lost their password or made a slight error, everyones human and these sort of things from time to time.

It's stored in the wallet.dat file. There's no server for storing your details as such. Just a public ledger of all transactions.
