Hi Guys

I am getting started in Bitcoin and have a few questions.

Is Electrum a good choice of Bitcoin wallet?  I want something that has good usability.

Can Electrum be trusted fully?  The reason I ask is because the Windows Installer is signed by someone called Animazing.  That is using a nickname rather than a real name, so how do I know they can be trusted?

How do I check the PGP signature of the Windows Installer download?  I believe I need the public PGP key of Animazing?  Is this given on this page?

http://bitcoin-otc.com/viewgpg.php?nick=Animazing

Thanks Cool

I don't personally use Electrum, but I have never heard of any (serious) security issues.

About the signing, I can help you out there:

Signing with a bitcoin address and a PGP key are two completely different things.
Even though they use the same principal (Private/public) key.

Electrum can sign/verify bitcoin keys.

If you need signing/verifying of PGP keys, then will you need another application, e.g. Kleopatra.

Feel free to ask question, if any Smiley

Edit:
The public key of the OTC user Animazing can be found here:

Cryptography is one of the few things you can truly trust.

Can Electrum be trusted fully?

I've found that Electrum is by far the easiest to set up and use (without having to worry about downloading a blockchain). Now as to whether it can be trusted, considering it's open source it may have been reviewed in the past (a good indicator) and there have been no historical problems or issues with coins being lost on account of Electrum. That being said, IIRC Armory has been checked thoroughly and is used by more people so if you truly want to ensure that you don't lose coins it is the way to go - but you'll trade off convenience for it.

Electrum is open source and I trust it 100%

It doesn't matter if a dev uses an alias or real name in my opinion, both can be fake.

someone mentioned kleopatra, use it to confirm PGP and/or google how to use it. It's not complicated.

These two excellent guides will help you a lot:

Signing with bitcoin address, all the major bitcoin wallets is explained here, including Electrum:

Electrum is good and quite easy to understand but I prefer Multibit.

Here's an article that may help you with your decision, its good to know that electrum allows the use of seeds to recover your wallet.

You will have to read up on the person's reputation. The chief developer is Thomas Voegtlin (ThomasV) formerly of INRIA. Animazing is another contributor and he signs the Windows releases.

If you know python you can go through the code. This way you are not trusting anyone.

The devs' public keys can be found on the git repo:

https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/tree/master/pubkeys

Questions about electrum are best asked in the electrum forum:

i am currently using Electrum as one of my wallets and have never encountered any problem nor seen any security issues being reported.
you can check its section in this forum for more info and feedback: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=98.0
also since it is open source, you can easily check the code yourself and even if you are not familiar with programming you can be sure that if there is any problem with coding since many people are using it, it will be caught and fixed immediately.
