I'm happy to announce that I've started work on BitVendor. BitVendor is a simple to use, cash register-like, system for merchants wanting to accept Bitcoin. Specifically, it's targeted towards mobile vendors such as cart vendors, cabs, busses, or anyone else who moves their business around and needs to accept Bitcoin. It can accept manual entry of prices and UPC's or can work with almost any optical scanner on the market to easily read UPC coded items.

For vendors who keep inventory, BitVendor will allow easy and fast inventory management, shrink tracking, and, eventually, automated ordering.

The software will allow vendors to easily engage in Bitcoin transactions with anyone with a mobile phone (not even a smart phone) and integrates all of the features you'd expect in a modern merchant system.

Estimated release date will be October 20th, 2012. Will be available for Windows, Linux, and OS X.

I'd like feedback on features you'd like to see. Keep in mind that this is merchant software and not consumer software for average users.

Thanks!

I don't speak Chinese so, unless someone is willing to step up, it will be in English and Spanish only. If you're up to translating though, I could definitely use the help. But I could also use help in promotion and application too. Thanks!

I'm not completely sure what you mean but I'll give it a shot. Basically, it's a 'cash register' for offline merchants that want to easily accept Bitcoin. It will allow merchants to specify product prices in their local currency (right now only USD and Euro) and will use the MtGox API to translate that into semi-realtime (updated once every 5 minutes or so) Bitcoin prices. It will also integrate text messaging to allow users to use any mobile Bitcoin client they want to pay for their stuff.  Eventually, I'd like to work with someone who's doing Bitcoin debit cards to be able to accept those too.

That's the 'Bitcoin ecosystem' part of it. Everything else (like inventory management, reporting, etc) is pretty much standard POS stuff.

Good point! I'm hoping to get a few people at the next PorcFest to try it out. But it would work at almost any festival where people are interested in using Bitcoins.
