Install Oracle VM Virtualbox.

But VM is not needed. You can install Ubuntu on a different(better) or same partition.

P.S. To install Ubuntu, download it from http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop and create a live USB/CD and install it. Don't make any changes in partitions to avoid potential problems.

If your new to Ubuntu probably best to play around with it in a VM first of all. Much safer that way.

I chose VM because the OP didn't want his basic OS installation/system to be affected.  The OP may not be an expert in multiple boot, which does interfere in your overall system.

You should install latest ubuntu, you can use virtualbox; here's a nice guide:

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/virtualbox

latest ubuntu: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

thats desktop version, choose 32 bit or 64 bit according to your system. I would go 32 bits if you dont actually know what you are doing.
