I have heard people and all these marketplaces guys and other hackers, who can just close their laptop lid, and have everything secure and encrypted even if someone had access to their laptops. Can anyone suggest on how I can do the same ?

In order to get the maximum amount of activity points possible, you just need to post once per day on average. Skipping days is OK as long as you maintain the average.

Full disk encryption. Fow Windows XP Vista and 7 I recommend DiskCryptor. After system is fully encrypted set the power management to Hibernate the laptop when lid is closed. When it finishes hibernating, everything is encrypted, including the hiberfile.sys and there is no decryption key in memory. To Resume power laptop on, enter the password for bootloader and be fully up and running as soon as it finishes reading the encrypted hiberfile.sys
Don't use Standby when lid is closed (the default option for many systems). It is possible to bypass the Windows login screen and the encryption keys still reside in memory when laptop is fully-on or in Standby.

Yes, TrueCrypt 7.1a is secure, but DiskCryptor offer better performance and full support for hibernating on WinXP

I think the only full-disk encryption for MacOS are from Norton. It is closed source and unsuitable to secure private data. Don't use Apple.

Note that when the police searches a computer for data, they do not switch it on. They remove the hard disk, and plug that hard disk to their own computer. So whatever encryption method you use shall manage that.
