SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The original charges were shocking: Six San Francisco police officers were accused of stealing from drug dealers. Then federal prosecutors released racist and homophobic text messages.

Those texts have now turned a small-time police corruption case into a racially charged scandal, thrusting a diverse and liberal city into the national debate over policing in minority communities.

"We now know this can happen in San Francisco," San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon said. "We're certainly not immune to the problems that we have seen in Baltimore, Staten Island, South Carolina."

The San Francisco turmoil comes amid growing tensions between police departments and communities of color. Large, sometimes violent protests over police treatment of black suspects have occurred in several cities over the last two years.

San Francisco is in many ways similar to Baltimore. The majority of the population is non-white, but a large majority of the police force is white. Therefore we have the police force (which is 75% white) dealing with the offenders, who are 90% non-white. Sooner or later, this was going to create issues. Now gangs such as the Southern Poverty Law Center will demand non-white quotas for police.

6 cops being racist, with proof, they deserve what they have coming (which will hopefully be some good jail time if their racism resulted in unfair treatment). If they were just racist, they deserve to lose their badge forever in the State of California.

The cool thing is that SF residents didn't burn their city upon hearing the news! Why can't other cities react rationally and productively. It never will make sense to me why people who are mad at the system think burning their own city will make anything different. It's nonsense.
