GPU mining rig advise

guys i have no knowledge about H/W so thought to get some advise from the community.

i have a project to build a GPU mining rig with medium strength and same rig will be used as a in house server total budget is $300. my client just need the casing with no monitor or other peripheral accs.

pls advise if goal is achievable and what would be the specification for it?

300$ is pretty low. But I guess you could build a rig around 750Tis. Most probably only one, unless you manage to get the rest of the components really cheap. Your best bet would be to reuse components you have laying around and focusing you budget on the GPUs. You don't need much: a motherboard with as many PCI express ports as possible (so you can grow the rig later), the cheapest CPU you can find and a bit of RAM. You don't even need a hard drive if you are willing to boot from a USB key. Be careful with the power supply: it should come from a reputable brand, and your rig should use between 50 and 80% of its capacity for maximum efficiency.

This is not medium strength though. Pretty much the smallest you can get. But this is a first step in the world of low-power-consumption rigs that can make a profit even in the summer :-)

it won't be a very powerfull server nor a medium gpu rig...

lets put some number: a motherboard: 70$ (a cheap one)
                               some memory: 50$
                               a psu (low end)   : 50$
                               a cpu (low end)  : 100$
                               a cheap harddrive: 20$ (don't ask... these aren't those I buy)
we are already at: 290$ and we don't have a gpu card...
lets add one 750ti: 100$ : 390$
but more realistically, if you want to mine at least 3 or 4 are a minimum...

edit: actually buy a cheap microATX factory assembled pc and buy a riser and a 750ti (budget probably around 500$)

hmmm pretty much in my budgeted amount i cant make any so will first gather approx 600 and thn look for the spec. thanks though for your help

If you want to mine efficiently, you have to put as many as graphics cards as possible so that the total system cost per GPU is lowered.

You really should pick one and be application-specific. Try to make a GPU rig and a server at the same time for even $600, and you will have a shitty gpu rig and a shitty server.

If you are making this as a hobby then fine, or maybe you have super cheap electricity where you live.  Right now scrypt is supposed to be very hard or impossible to mine for a profit.  I suggest you run some numbers.  Find out the hash of your rig, the cost of electricity, factor in the network difficulty of the coin you want to mine and its value.  You will almost certainly get a better return on your money with a reputable cloud service like hashnest.  Some of the services are supposedly ponzis, so if the returns seem to good to be true then they most likely are.

But if it is just for fun have at it.

Also for future reference, you don't typically want to run anything else 'server' related particularly if its anything production level on a rig that's mining.  I haven't worked with a GPU rig that doesn't completely crash every now and again and obviously you don't want this happening on any of your critical server stuff.
