Someone used social engineering to gain access to the servers. So a lot was compromised and that is why you have also received an email saying that you should change passwd and secret question.

Social engineering is when you smoothtalk yourself into a serverroom or into the acounts. It is when you personaly and physacaly have contact with the item you hack. Opposed to the other kinds of hacking which is by bruteforcing it. Glad it is up now, changed my password and the likes, glad I had a seperate password for the forum, so no changing needed in other places. Password: **********

I'm glad finally the forum back online. Don't forget to change your password and account secret question. If you used the same password on bitcointalk.org as on other sites, then you should also immediately change your password on those other sites. Also, if you had a secret question set, then you should assume that the attacker now knows the answer to your secret question.

Thanks theymos for the hardwork. I changed my password but not my email ID as I'm not sure if I should do it as the pwd used on this forum wasn't used anywhere else fortunately. I've not received any phishing email except this one yesterday:
Whether you change your email or not is up to you and it should be ok but remember it has been exposed now so take that into consideration.

Yeah I know that the address is now revealed to the hacker but not the password. Anyways my PMs too don't have any sensitive information except my email address. Only issue is the IP addresses which have been leaked now. I hope it doesn't harm me or any other member. I deleted my earlier message as it wasn't relevant to this thread.

Well, for security purposes, the first thing I did when I logged in to this forum is change my password. Better safe than sorry. It's nice to see that the forum is up and running again, and it's quite saddening that the downtime extended through our lovely Bitcoin for Pizza day. But oh well, I guess that's how the system works after all. Good to see everything is back to normal (well, kinda).

Paranoid much ? Those are called reasonable security practices considering the level of the security breach. It's not paranoia if they are really out to get you. There are no delusions nor unreasonable nor irrational mistrust and suspicion. They actually broke into the database and got access to our information. To pretend it did not happen and not alter your access information appropriately is pure folly. Maybe the forum staff should send law enforcement your details, since you appear to be attempting to discourage people from reacting in a rational fashion to secure their accounts. It appears you want time to crack open those password hashes...

Paranoid much ? For users using password generators its really not much hassle, would take <5 minutes to change all important accounts and maybe <2 hours for all accounts.
